Merciful fuck.

One of their nuke plants had a shutdown of the cooling system about an hour ago, and it looks like they're not having any luck getting it fixed.

Quotean administrator at the Tohoku Electric Power Co's Onagawa facility said the process for the cooling reactor is "not going as planned," adding that "nuclear emergency situation" has been declared.

I don't know that it was ON the fault line.  An 8.9 is gonna rattle shit for a LONG way away.
You gotta wonder what kind of mentality builds a nuclear reactor on a fault line. Actually, scratch that, I don't gotta wonder, it was people did it, right?

I hope Belgium is okay.

Anyway, that reactor thing.  I thought they used pebble bed reactors there?

I'm not an engineer but I'm guessing those are somewhow quake/tsunami proof?

Not so much as they don't tend to run away when the cooling pumps take a shit.

I'm not sure there's much of anything that's 8.9 proof...

Not as far as I can tell.

Though Toshiba did build the whole thing.  Which means, if my laptop is anything to go by, the buildings there will be durable as hell, and surprisingly affordable considering the going market rate.

Might be an old reactor?  Though, people tend to freak out when something goes wrong with a nuke plant, even when it's something the plant was designed to deal with, I still her people mention 3 mile island as a reason nuclear energy is a bad idea ffs.

Its not that old.

It has systems designed to knock it offline in the event of an earthquake, which have worked before.  However, the plant has in the past been told its performance is not satisfactory and had problems with leaking pipes and pressure control.

Hawaii.

QuoteForecasters said some areas may see waves of up to 9 feet.

Is there something about Hawaii's geography that would make a 9 foot wave worth bothering about? If it's an island, surely they get that kind of shit all the time?

LMNO

I'm assuming it's "9 feet above normal", or rather than a relatively small 9' wave that crashes and recedes, it's a 9' wave that never stops crashing.

Jenne

A lot of oceanfront property in Hawaii is like any other coastal developed area--folks have their shit all over the shore.  So you'll see infrastructure literally washed away.  Now, this is at their own peril, of course, since hurricanes etc. tend to wash shit away from shore all the time.

Suu

9' above normal sea levels in addition to waves of that size hitting over and over and over again. The beach erosion is going to be severe.
