Because most people are too fucking dumb to be trusted with any say whatsoever in how the world is run. Isn't it high time the smart fuckers took control? Stupidity as grounds for enslavement serves a dual purpose

1. Leave the intellectual elite with more free time on their hands

2. Prevent the stoopids doing stupid shit like having dumb fucking ideas, mass vetoing good ones and causing all manner of wars and bad teevee and shit

I'm up to my arse in Brexit Numpties, but I want more.  Target-rich environments are the new sexy.

This latter part is not readily admitted; on the contrary the idea that an air castle lasts longer than the very air of which it is made is hard to get out of a person's head, and this is fortunate, otherwise the custom of making those almost eternal constructions might be lost.

Personally it's my take on the whole industrial revolution and later the whole consumerist thing that grew out of it. Probably goes back further. It takes a degree of smarts for any minority to control a majority, even by brute force alone. But my personal theory is there's a new level of smart emerging. The kind of smart that could run rings round the previous wiseguys if they only could be arsed to get mobilised.
