Was "black magic" also responsible for Countdown to Extinction, Youthanasia, and, well, pretty much every album after Rust in Peace?

I also wonder if he refuses to play Five Magics.

I would agree, looking at their recording career on balance.  However, Rust in Peace was a monster of an album. 

In fact, I'd go as far to say that while Metallica, overall, has had a better recording career, I think Rust in Peace is better than pretty much every Metallica album recorded. even Master of Puppets, if only by a little.

One of the first times I heard them I was all like "What the fuck is that?" and my mate who was into them got all evangelical - "He was the original guy in Metallica and he wrote half the first album and shit, listen to this" There then followed some twat trying to play four horsemen at about 10 times the normal speed and at that point I was like "yeah well what a fucking great idea ... not"

First time I heard them was their cover of "No More Mr. Nice Guy" on the Shocker soundtrack.  Which is a fairly decent cover.  But I was really hooked the first time I heard "Holy War" on Headbanger's Ball.  Then came the bitter disappointment when he tried to ape Metallica's "Black album" with Countdown to Extinction.  Pitiful.

I think he's confusing black magic with drug abuse, alcoholism, being a difficult personality to work with, and his seeming inability to let go of grudges (especially with Metallica).

Attention whoring at its worst. I stopped paying attention to Metallica after Reload. I heard some of St. Anger and was glad I got out when I did. Well, that and the fact that they wrote two sequels to Unforgiven, which was totally pointless. I stopped paying attention to Megadeth after the System Has Failed, not because I disliked the album, but rather that I never really got around to buying their later albums.

Megadeth never put out anything worthwhile after Rust In Peace.

However, Rust In Peace is probably the single best metal album ever made by anyone, ever. I also really liked So Far, So Good, So What?

But yeah, Mustaine is not somebody I'd invite to my poker table.



Also, I can't believe I'm saying this, but....

Metallica's newest album (Death Magnetic) is actually GOOD. I don't know why they had to go 20 years between good albums, but it actually stands up to And Justice For All.

I'm almost with you on death magnetic. Every track is a return to classic form. Right up until the point where Hammett gets all avant garde over the solo. Someone really ought to murder that little prick in cold blood.

Yeah, that's a fair assessment. Though he does lay down a pretty wicked face-melter on All Nightmare Long.

He uses that wah peddle way too much.  In fact, my theory is that for St. Anger, the guys hid it from him, thus rendering him helpless and unable to do solos.
