And such...

Itt, we post moments of happiness.
That is all.

driving back home in the AM hours (morning after a good nights rest, not drunk late night hours)-the weather-just perfect , a cool breeze not too hot nor cold, just perfect...windows rolled down...the song that just makes you wanna smile and move comes on the car radio, you crank it and just lose yourself in the moment.

Yes, I am fucking crazy for good biscuits. Craving the hell out of some atm. lol

Today, when I calculated the velocity of another galaxy based on the amount of redshift in hydrogen absorption lines of a cepheid variable star, with which I used Hubbles constant to calculate it's approximate distance, in Mega light-years, from our own galaxy. Without help, or notes.

It's easy, watch.

First, you need to use the following equation to determine the deviation of the absobtion lines towards the red end of the spectrum (a unit-less number we'll call "Z"):

Z=Wo-Wr/Wr

(Where "W" is used instead of the traditional lamda, mainly because I don't have a lamda key on my keyboard. Subscript "o" is the observed wavelength of the moving star, and subscript "r" is the rest wavelength of hydrogen, in nano-meters)

The rest wavelength of hydrogen is 656.3 nm, and we'll call our observed wavelength, for the sake of this example, 659.6 nm. So, we'll start by plugging these numbers into the above formula, and we'll get:

Z=659.6nm-656.3nm/656.3nm

So, after a quick dimensional analisys, we'll see our units cancel, and we can crunch the numbers to get:

Z=.005

Now that we've figured the amount of redshift of the spectral lines, we can use this number to determine the stars velocity with the following setup:

V=CxZ

"Z" is our amount of redshift which we just determined, and "C" is a constant we should all recognize as the speed of light, 3x10^8 m/s. However, to use this number with Hubble's constant it must be first converted to km, which we do by dividing it by 1000, which should get us 3x10^5 km/s. So, we plug these numbers in, and solve for V.

V=(3x10^5 km/s)(.005)

V=1500 km/s

Our units can stay as km/s, as Z has no units, and we see our cepheid variable star is moving at about fifteen hundered kilometers a second. We're almost there. To determine the approximate distance to said cepheid variable, we simply divide the velocity by Hubble's constant, 22 km/s/MLy, to get the rough distance:

d=V/Ho

or, in our case:

d=1500km/s / 22km/s/Mly

And we get our answer of 68.18 Mega-Light years from us. One mega light year is equal to a million light years, so we can multiply our answer by a million to determine the distance in light years, which is just about 68.2x10^5 light years.

That's awesome, Dimo. :)

It's really neat for me, because up untill about a month ago, I had severe doubts about my capacity to complete and understand more complex mathematics. Actually, doing it is enthralling. Not many "old dogs" can learn such cool new tricks.

An aside: "Redshift" would be an awesome band name.

You are a lot smarter than you think you are. This is so much better than the other way around.

I just signed up for my fall classes.  I suppose that made me less hating.  So is good thing.

One fine early morning day, you should go into the astronomy department computer lab, and paint the shift keys on their keyboards. One blue, one red.

Observe how they, one-by-one, figure it out.

I haven't been totally self-loathing as of late. In fact, I've been the happiest I've been in a while. Maybe its the end of the semester, maybe it's me starting to get back on track with work, maybe it's because I'm hitting it off with a great guy I like a lot...I don't know. Suddenly summer doesn't seem so bleak and fruitless for me as it's been lately.

Yeah,  also with Ice cream and Banana added, it was pretty damn awesome, like a banana smoothie, except alcoholic
