News:

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

It also means that they may have sold your debt to a collection agency.  Which sucks.

Would they do that even though they're getting a payment each month? Is it the age of the original charge they look at?

Sounds like someone's playing monkeyfuck with their taxes.

Could they be held liable if it ends up screwing with my credit?

Unless you had a written agreement, I believe they can do that if they choose.

No.  But they may be able to provide something you can add to your credit report explaining the situation.

That sucks. The bolded is a comforting thought, though. :-)

Called the AG & got the Consumer Protection #. They must be really busy today.  :? Left a message. Hoping I'll hear back from them today. If not, I'll call again tomorrow.

They've always called me back in 24 hours or less. If by some fluke they don't call you, you can probably file a complaint online. It's obviously better to talk to a person, though.

What does the place you actually received the bill from have to say?

Hmm.  In that case, I can see this scenario:

They have written off the remainder of the debt, which means the non-applied 2/3 would be treated as an overpayment, and they may mail you a check for that amount in a week or so.

That would be great to get a check back from them!

I wish their business office would hurry up and return my calls. Day 3 and they're still silent. Tried calling them again this morning & got punted to voice mail right away. That seems really off to me. They're not a big outfit like Mayo, but still...someone's usually at the phones during business hours.

As far as I know once you are on a payment plan set up by the company you are good.  If you are just paying some each month without an official plan, then that can end up you up with bill collection depending on the age of the bill.

Here's the weird part about my situation, I've never once received a bill from the hospital.  Not one!  Not from a collection agency either.  The hospital was working with health insurance and car insurance, turned it over to a collection agency due to three parties being involved, they got the health insurance to pay, turned it back over to the hospital and now there is no balance.  There SHOULD have been a balance, but there isn't, just that "Bad Credit" thing.  I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I don't want my credit score messed with.

That's good to know, too. I'm grateful you told me about them. :-)

Yeah, I saw that, but I thought you would have continued trying to call them, like every ten minutes until someone called you back.

Stopping at one or two messages with places like this don't always get you anywhere.

I dont have any advice, but I do have to say, I fucking LOVE my socialist state healthcare.

Id really be fucked without it. My meds cost the state about £100 a month. I get them free.

<-------so jealous! The out-of-pocket co-pays for my meds come close to $100 a month. I am grateful that insurance covers what it does though, otherwise I'd be shit outta luck.

Mesozoic Mister Nigel

After insurance paid, I owe $600 for my ovarian ultrasound. I had to apply for financial assistance, and really all that means is I get to set up a payment plan.

Mesozoic Mister Nigel

Oh, and that was 20 minutes. A 20 minute ultrasound. It cost $200 to have each kid ultrasounded, and they use the same equipment. I even went to the same place. And, it's not like that includes ANY treatment. Just the ultrasound. I still have an ovarian cyst the size of a walnut, and can't do a fucking thing about it.
