I want to make it totally clear that, per the OP,  I am not really looking to fix my 6-year-old Compaq Presario. It was already a piece of shit when I bought it new. It makes no sense to put any resources at all into it; I am going to replace it.

Serious:  Keep the keyboard & the monitor, pick up a cheap netbook, and plug them into it.

All the power of a proper computer, no tiny screen or 1/4" keys.

Too small hard drive, not enough RAM, not enough USB ports. Plus, the kids can't steal a desktop.

I have to buy a new shipping computer. I'm going to try to spend less than $400. Any recommendations/advice?

Do you have a copy of Windows you can put on it?

:lulz: What?

Does your new computer need to have windows already installed, or do you have an installation CD or some thang you can use to get the Windows to be on your computer with?

I have a Windows CD, but most new computers already have it installed.

It's just something you can save a few bucks on if you already have it.

If your CD isn't 64 bit Windows 7, you're probably better off getting a computer with it already installed.

Yeah, it's XP, and finding a cheap computer that doesn't have Windows installed is a challenge. Amazon has the Asus refurbs back in, I'm getting one of those.

Regardless of if/when you get a new computer, if I understand correctly a lot of the work involves renaming files. In that case you might want to take a look at Total Commander. It's a file manager that includes a very useful interactive multi-rename tool, allowing you to rename multiple files at once, if the renaming task has patterns in it (like a search/replace for filenames, sort of).

Total Command is a littlebit like a Windows version of the oldskool DOS program Norton Commander, in case you remember that one.

It's also shareware, of the type that has a "nag screen" reminder when you start it. There's also a freeware version of it called Free Commander, but I've never used that one so I can't vouch for how good it is. Total Commander is pretty damn sweet, though.

If you google for "multi rename tool", or something, there are also many other solutions that can greatly speed up the task of renaming many different files in a particular fashion.

[and one other thing, sorry if this is obvious and you already know it, but if you have selected a file in Explorer, pressing F2 is the keyboard shortcut to rename it so you don't have to rightclick etc the mouse]

e-prime disclaimer: let it seem fairly unclear I understand the apparent subjectivity of the above statements. maybe.

INFORMATION SO POWERFUL, YOU ACTUALLY NEED LESS.

Heh, I had one of those.  They were a bit shitty, weren't they?  Bad positioning for the fans, as well.

Actually, one of the few things I really like about Windows Explorer is the file management utility; Since I have to vet my images and select which ones I want to keep/rename, and have them numbered in a specific order, it serves my needs exactly perfectly, and is also almost identical to the way Mac USED to manage files before OSX: I'm still irritated with Apple for changing it.

On a fast computer I can vet/rename a couple hundred pictures in groups of four in half an hour. With the lagfuckingbullshit currently going on, it's been taking me hours. It's fucked. I just ordered my new computer and it'll be here Tuesday.

HORRIBLE positioning! I've already replaced both the hard drive and the fan on this once. I probably will eventually put a new hard drive in it and give it to one of the kids, but right now if I'm going to spend a bunch of time re-installing software I'd like it to be on a new computer.
