And anyone who can describe Australia as one of the most benign democracies in the western world has never seen inside one of the detention centres where children sew their lips together in desperate attempts to have the populace see how they are silenced. Where mentally ill inmates are left to self harm and jump from roofs. Where child molesters are held side by side with unaccompanied children.

Or spent time in an Indigenous Community, beset by alcohol and drug abuse, systemic child sexual assault, petrol sniffing, domestic violence and malnutrition. Where they have 300 school age kids and a school equipped to handle fewer than 50 students. No running water. No electricity. No sewerage system or garbage collection services. Where there are infant mortality rates akin to those in Central Africa and where life expectancy is 20 years lower than it is in the white community beside it.
