The UK government's Downing Street YouTube channel has a video of former British Conservative prime minister Margaret Thatcher's appearance on BBC children's programme, Blue Peter, where she talked vaguely about the good Khmer Rouge/bad Khmer Rouge for the bring and buy sale kids.

Nice middle class kids who did their bit for the isolated People's Republic of Kampuchea, which unfortunately found itself on the 'wrong' side of the Cold War. Mrs Thatcher was on the right side, as was Pol Pot.

I could google it but is there any chance of a quick Cain-summary of what the fuck went down in Cambodia? I was never too clear on that section of history.

After the US left Vietnam, the Vietnamese invaded Cambodia, because of all of the refugees fleeing Pol Pot's truly evil regime, and Cambodian border provocations.

Vietnam was more of a Russian proxy as well, while Cambodia was a Chinese proxy, and this was after they had gone their seperate ways, so both were being used for a geopolitical pissing match.

And since China was our friend, it meant Cambodia was our friend, sorta.  

As for what Pol Pot did...he killed 2 million people in a country of only 7.8 million.  The Vietnamese helped topple his government and occupied the country for a decade after.
