That line from the father's song in Mary Poppins, where he's going on about how nothing can go wrong, in Britain in 1910.  That's about the point I realized the boy was gonna die in a trench.

No offense to your friend, Nigel, but being a financial analyst gives financial analysts a bad name. :lulz:

Well, she has a masters in Public Health, and she works for hospitals. Doing stuff too obscure for me to even understand, but somehow or other it's supposed to decrease people's chances of dying.

I'm not 100% certain that I'm on board with that either, but good on her. :lulz:

Lots of libraries I've been to have a really wrong vibe for academic work though.  The weak attempts at modernity at the grievous expense of comfort and shelf-space, the lack of old book smell, and the quiet desperation...  It can be hard to find a library that has a good library feel to it.

Yeah, but if you're looking for a place with a roof where you can hang out for hours on end for free, they can't be beat.

This is probably why the public library in Portsmouth has a continuous problem with crack dealing, prostitution, and homeless crazy people stabbing each other and random patrons. :lulz:

Not kidding either, just before we left on this trip they had to resort to hiring armed guards.

That is exactly why.

True!  I'd love to find a late night library that had a bar.

...I should open a late night library with a bar.   :link:

Squiddy had another idea about a bar that was win as well.  *scratches head*  I disremember exactly wtf it was, however.

Odds are good that they didn't cut him slack because he's a regular and they know him and he has become a problem.

I'm almost certain this is the case.

A corporation like Starbucks pushes a "Legendary Service" protocol on their baristas (or at least did when I worked there and when my wife managed one).  If some guy came in and sat for 3 hours or more even, I doubt they'd throw him out.  If some guy came in every day and did this, the issue becomes a problem.

It's interesting, too, that the DM was the one who said something.  Usually a manager would handle things like this in the store, but the fact that the DM did it seems to imply that Starbucks was looking to make sure they approached the guy in an Human Relations compliant way.  IIRC, if one were to ban someone from the store (for whatever reason), the manager would need the say-so from HR.

Finally, along with the entitlement idea, it's AMAZING how many Starbucks customers are like that.  But Starbucks is also to blame for creating that snobbery culture to begin with.  The wife once had a regular customer who would come in and park his full size RV in a small mall strip parking lot and walk in with a goddamn parrot on his shoulder. -- "Sir, you can't bring that bird in here." and the guy just flipped the fuck out overturning chairs and cursing.

I thought the best part was he thought sitting in a coffee shop working on a laptop was a form of social interaction

Yeah, his little list of "fond memories of social interaction" (which I can't quote exactly because his original blog post has apparently been [RESOLVED], but I remember it included watching someone's computer while she took a piss and a miscommunication leading to what he seemed to feel was a life-long friendship) just screamed "creepy, socially inept, potential sex offender" I can't imagine why the fine people at Starbucks (especially the female employees) would want this guy to leave.

"Resolved" eh?  Is that what kids are calling "making an ass of myself on my blog and then removing the embarrassing evidence" nowadays?

kingyak

You should read the replacement post. It actually makes this twit seem even more self-absorbed (which I didn't think was possible).

I don't even think I can read it. Not this early in the morning. I was going to say that I can't believe he took down his OP, but actually that's exactly the kind of thing people like that do.

I'll check Ken's law blog for entertaining commentary, it's bound to be good.

I was wondering about that myself. The only time I think the DM we had came out for something like that was this dude who would skateboard around the store and threatened the manager when he asked him not to do so.
