Any ambition must be tempered with a total lack of integrity, and a natural aptitude for shamelessly brown nosing their immediate Superiors.

Lack of social skills is also an advantage, as is the obsessional need for the kind of respect they  could never obtain in civilian life due to their aberrant personality type.
It also helps if they were completely dominated as a child by their overbearing Mothers, and bullied relentlessly throughout their school years for reasons they could never fathom.
