I honestly don't know why there is an entertainment section of the news, especially where it ends up being a bunch of unentertaining celebrity gossip. Seriously, whatever the most recent coked up starlet's antic are are not important at all. But people seem to care.

I was just thinking about this earlier today when someone on Facebook posted about [I think] one of the actor's from Twilight expecting a kid with his girlfriend. I....I just honestly don't understand this celebrity obsession that some/most/seems like everyone seems to have. It's gotta be some weird combination of living vicariously and schadenfreude, right?

And then, I check my boss's e-mail for work sometimes, and the homepage cycles through today's news stories, etc. And apparently what constitutes as *news* is what some actress or another wore 3, 10, 4, whatever years ago. I already don't care who's wearing what ever, but who the fuck cares about what they were wearing any number of years ago (besides, isn't it out of style by now? hurr hurr)
There's no sun shine coming through her ass, if you are sure of your penis.

Paranoia is a disease unto itself, and may I add, the person standing next to you, may not be who they appear to be, so take precaution.

Celebrities are modern day versions of the medieval devotional cults that sprang up around saints.  It's something that is hardwired into human behaviour, it seems.  You'll also note certain politicians, let us consider a hypothetical Alaskan politician called Parah Salin for instance, who have similar devotional cults around them.

Interesting. Are there any devotional cults in particular that really illustrate this point? I'm not so good with my medieval history and could use a little guidance.

Cain

The one that sprung up around Mary is probably the most well known, but Joseph, Michael and George had well established subcultures of rituals, relics and places associated with them.

That comparison does make a lot of sense. It still baffles me though. Especially when it goes from some weird voyeurism/vicarious living to some sort of actual emotional attachment to this character/image/idol.
