I gotta throw out there that it's not just here. It's the whole fucking internet. People are broke, stressed, working too much, gone back to school, and have less free time. A lot of people are changing how they use their free time, too, and are busy being all activisty. It's frustrating, but it's the whole world, and not just this board.

We're living in the Strange Times, and it is natural like you say that people will drift away.

Somewhat related to the advertising above, our sources of new members have dried up over the years. Most people come to Discordia through either the Principia, or the Illuminatus! trilogy, I would guess. The Black Iron Prison and Intermittens are great, but they haven't achieved that level of traction. As the Principia and Illuminatus have fallen out of step with the times, we're no longer getting those people.

Maybe some sort of Principia 2.0, BiP revisited (maybe the Shared Walls thread could be a jumping off point?) or work of fiction with Discordian elements (and namedropping) getting out there and onto shelves could help replace those. Ebooks and similar internet-based distribution methods could do so in part, but I don't think they are widespread enough yet to do so completely.

We do need to get the Discordian 'brand' (if you can call it that without throwing up) out there some more if we want to attract new people. We've brainstormed a lot of projects as to how to do that in the past, though, and they tend to fall through. I think if it is going to happen, it is going to be an individual or very small group (2-3 people) who makes it happen.

What's that you say?  A book, or something?

Yup! That sort of thing!  :)

Only aiming for bookstores and publishers. AFAIK the Chao Te Ching is only print on demand, right?

Kids don't go to bookstores anymore!  They use social media:  http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/The-Chao-te-Ching/359575027400539

Pimp it, y'all.  Pimp it.

Might be worth looking at how to get it on Amazon as an ebook. I've seen tons of cheap independent stuff on there, so it couldn't hurt.

You have to pay them a fee, I believe.

Q. G. Pennyworth

Ignoring the cost aspect, is that something people would want to do?

Nephew Twiddleton

Also is the fee a flat rate or is it a percentage per sale? Actually charley could answer this.

Personally?  Yes.  I helped write a goddamn book.  I want more people to read it.

Maybe it would be a good idea to move this discussion to it's own thread. I was ignoring it for a while because I didn't want to read about star wars.

We could create ads for PD.com and stick them in stuff we publish (intermittens, BIP, whatever). Something like "In 2011 we all got together and jaked Michelle Bachmann" (I'm sure thee are better examples, that's the first one I thought of).

There is an old Discordian Reading Materials torrent, but it's not properly seeded. Maybe it's time to make a new one, and include some stuff about this site.

If we created a 2012 Guide to Discordianism, and included everything we can find (even the self proclaimed Discordian stuff we don't like much), PD.com would likely come out as one of the places where things are happening. The facebook groups are largely noise, the individuals like Uncle BadTouch and Timothy Bowen aren't producing much good stuff (although I am impressed by the sheer volume of stuff Mr. Bowen is producing). As far as I can tell, this is the place to go.

If we were to make a decent-sized book, maybe put in BIP, the Chao wingding thing, and Common Walls, it might be worth doing a proper printing run.

"Billy, when I say that ethics is our number one priority and safety is also our number one priority, you should take that to mean exactly what I said. Also quality. That's our number one priority as well. Don't look at me that way, you're in the corporate world now and this is how it works."

If i recall emo howard or kingyak or both were thinking of starting up a newspaper. That could be another vehicle for advertisement.
