If you wanted to take an engineering survey on America (Europe, too, but I'm going to stick with what I know), you'd basically find that it is built on bones.  In fact, it would look like a spiral staircase made of bones, with the foundation being the bones of Native Americans.

Above the Native Americans, you'd find a really thick layer of Blacks, with some Hispanics and Chinese here and there, and Native Americans continuing to appear in clumps.  Sprinkled around, you'll even find the occasional White person who had the Wrong Values.  At the very top, you'd find 12 year old factory workers from Bangladesh.

As a result, this future that we find ourselves in is a fragile thing, a feeble support that has no strength to it when the rumbles of history occasionally shake things up a bit.  Our future in fact rests on institutionalized murder and other crimes that we refuse to acknowledge or even look at, in this bright & shiny future in which we have UNLIMITED DATA on our iPads and iPhones, and in which we drive our cars (powered by the bones of dinosaurs, etc) to and from our jobs and schools, pretending that we don't live in a mausoleum.

Sound depressing?  If only it was.  But we are a fat & happy people, who cheerfully ignore the crunching noises underneath our feet.  That would be bad enough, but we are also always ready to add a fresh layer of bones to the stack, so that we may Rise Higher.  Iraqis, more 3rd world slaves, people whom we have termed "illegal" (and thus don't count).

If you don't make us look too closely, it's a really nice place.  The streets are paved with gold...Well, not entirely, but some of those bones may have wedding rings and gold fillings, I suppose.  There's room for everyone here, too.  Just find the right spot, a low spot in the foundation perhaps, and just lie down and settle in.  Company will be along shortly, because this is America™, and nobody has to Be Alone.

And since America is a vibrant, growing nation, we send our kids to foreign countries to gather more bones.  We're told, of course, that they are there defending liberty...But anyone who is paying attention knows that they are there to bring back the things that allow us to grow.  Oil, minerals, whatever...It's all bones in the end, so that those who stay behind, wheezing on their mobility scooters, can make this country reach its true potential.

Right now, there's a "reality show" fad on the television about "hoarders".  I haven't seen it, and I don't need to see it.  I see it every day, I can feel it powdering under my boots.  America™ has all it needs, all it will ever need...But we take that surplus and spend it on "defense", so that we can go get more bones.

Because, you see, our wars are not based on laughable things like "fighting terrorism" or "defending freedom", they're fought for the purpose of gathering building material.  In any case, that is the end result, no matter how many "support the troops" stickers we place on the back of our vehicles, and no matter how many rallies and concerts we attend to "support" them.  Sometimes, they come back all brain-bashed or minus limbs, etc...In which case, they've still brought the bones home, it's just that they brought their own, and we jam them under bridges to shore them up.

So let's hear it for the red, white, and blue.  Red for the blood of "patriots", white for the stacks of bones, and blue for the color of corpses.  And let's hear it for the market economy, that has brought us those and so many, many other wonderful things that we couldn't possibly live without.

Or Kill Me Some More.

That's why I always sort of sigh and shake my head when people say The System is broken.
Because The System not only sits on layers and layers and layers of the bones Roger talked about, it's built of the bones of the currently alive, too, turning on bony white gears and lubricated with blood. It's working just fine.

Forsooth

The United States' "colorful" history refers to all the shades of color between healthy off-white, to sun bleached and weathered yellow, to flesh-rotted-on-the-bone brown, to charred and crumbling black...

...and finally to the point where all that remains is the lost souls of those that couldn't perceive the truth, and the lingering broken dreams of those that could.

Bebek Sincap Ratatosk

The same is true though for most societies... we're monkeys and we kill and plunder and poop on territorial lines. We subjugate those we can, fight those we think we can beat, kill those we disagree with and those who we think may someday pose a threat to us. The US is maybe a little more hypocritical about the subject, but they don't hold a monopoly on it. I suspect its the way the machine has been working for the past 5 million years or so... or at least the past 700 centuries since we started cracking Neanderthals over the head with big tree branches.

It would be one thing if we all acknowledged and accepted that sort of fact... but the American Dream, I think sometimes refers more to the dreamlike state of denial many of them live in than the goals of their culture.

I think we need to differentiate between The American Dream, and the dreams Americans have.

The dreams Americans have:
1.  House in the suburbs w/white picket fence.
2.  A decent car or two.
3.  A better life for their kids.
4.  They also dream about being rich, because they think that will solve all of their problems.  In fact, they don't precisely know how they'd enjoy being rich.  Many imagine it to be something like being a 9 year old that can have whatever he/she wants, only with more "adult" toys.
5.  All of the above via hard work, so they can sneer a bit.

The American Dream:
1.  Hegemony over the majority of the world.
2.  A thin layer of aristocrats over a sea of the hoi polloi.
3.  Control.

For its intended purpose, yes.  This is why people think it's broken:  It is functioning in a way they do not expect or recognize.  They are looking for a paintbrush, but watching a blender.  Of course it looks broken.

Mesozoic Mister Nigel

This is the truth.

Garbo makes a good point too... the system isn't broken; it's just evil.

I don't know if we can change it, and if you try to opt out of it, it will kill you if it can.

But, we gotta try something. Police driving around in cars marked, simply, "Police", are killing unarmed citizens, and the killings are getting more frequent. We're afraid of masked gunmen in malls and theaters, but the police... well, that just makes us NEED them,  doesn't it?

I have to wonder what fate would have brought us if the gun boats didn't scare the british off the great lakes, would the diease we know as freedom be contained to the unholy 13? Would those of us on the west coast speak spanish or even manderan? I'm told a fence, a simple fence aided the north at a key battle...

there's a quote I'm thinkin of but I can't recall who said it... 'a war between nations is an arguement over which map to use'
Look, asshole:  Your 'incomprehensible' act, your word-salad, your pinealism...It BORES ME.  I've been incomprehensible for so long, I TEACH IT TO MBA CANDIDATES.  So if you simply MUST talk about your pineal gland or happy children dancing in the wildflowers, go talk to Roger, because he digs that kind of shit

They system isn't broken, nor is it evil, rather it's our emerging ability to think of it in those terms that's making us think it is. There's nothing happening in the world that isn't working the same in every other species on the planet, right down to the cellular level. We're the pinnacle of biology and biology is a selfish, greedy destructive cunt of a thing. Biology does not create wise, peace loving, caring, sharing organisms - those are weak as shit and basically get eaten by the real stars of Darwin's show - namely the meanest, nastiest bastards that ever walked the earth.

Actually, in the case of humans, evolution selects for humans that can cooperate.  Altruism is in fact a survival trait.  Bounce that one off of a libertarian sometime and watch the fun.
