I read about this years ago.
I've been trying to convince people to do this, but they just don't believe me :(

That's actually really awesome to me! It's not just a driving technique, it's a social commentary that can be metaphorically applied to alot of situations. Thank you!

Me too. No matter how much you explain it to some people, they can't get over their perception of being a "loser" if you leave plenty of room in front of you for people to pull into.

It reminds me of the 'love your enemies' bit and how that was explained in Walden Two.
Give me a second to look it up.
Hmm, I can't find a short explanation.
The gist of it is that positive reinforcement works better than punishment in the long run.
Using force immediatly affects the specific situation giving you a great boost (I am in front of that car! I am winning!) but does nothing for the greater pattern.
Acting in the best interest of those who are 'competing' with you does not get you where you want to go any faster but it does have two positive effects: 1. You feel better and more relaxed because you are not fighting anymore.
                              2. The game changes, the assholes can get to work 15 seconds faster, protecting every other driver from being frustrated by their aggressive driving style. In fact, when not frustrated, aggressive driving becomes elegant driving because a lot of frustration and anger is drained from the assholes (and roads in general).

Almost any situation where a resource is desired and the people need to simply chill out to make things go more smoothly. It could apply to shopping line checkouts, conversation, or whatever.  I'm impressed by the simple and enlightened attitude the dude displays because it puts the responsibility for the jam's solution on him and he reacts in a way that will be effective rather than make him no.1.
