Roger, if you post your content to the blog forum, it won't get rolled over by the crap (well it will in the forum view, but not in the Aggregator view).

And nobody will read it.  I'll wait until the shitstorm is over, I think.

I have read both Kai's and Phox's criticisms of my thinking. I am busy, but as soon as I have some time, I will respond. As far as I can see, there will be admissions of mistakes (here's one up front: spandrel was definitely the wrong word, thank you for clearing that up) as well as clarification. I do wish to add that I offered these ideas as a sort of "just so story".

If you offered them up as a just so story, then they are useless. You are basing your whole argument around a made up scenario without any evidence. I don't expect you will actually come back and address my strengthening and dismantling of my argument. No thanks for wasting my time.

To answer your serious question: Simple. Evidence of acceleration/increase of cultural exchange =/= evidence of societal isolation. Just because there was more crossover later is by no means indicative that there was ever a society in which there was "one language, one set of customs, one way of viewing the world".

Yes, okay, but you have already told me that. But if you think that the (at least seemingly) massive acceleration of cultural change was not driven by tribal societies going from relative (though, I agree, not complete) isolation to a great deal more interaction between tribes, then what was driving it, in your opinion?

So it's all these weeks later and I find myself wondering what I always wonder. What purpose does a poster like Holist get from posting on this board. He's obviously eloquent/intelligent so he's either trying to piss everone off on purpose or he's doing it unknowingly.

I don't know which one is weirder. Who'd want to spend whole hours of their time pissing of a bunch of random strangers?

or

What kind of mental disorder/cognitive impairment would enable the fact that you're the most annoying person on the internets to bypass your attention completely?

then I get one of those "truman show" moments

Maybe I'm like that

You see... I wondered in here, a casualty from countless stupid verbal battles in countless forums, thinking I had learnt the lesson well (you know the one: "arguing with complete strangers on the internet makes you a wanker even if you win") - and found a quality of exchange that was difficult to pin down, but it was clearly very different from the usual dross - contentious, combative, funny, clever, illuminating in places.

So I thought I'd join in - and I was not appreciated. For a while, I laboured under the misapprehension that I simply needed to try harder and also give what I got - but that didn't seem to work. Then I had my epiphany about how the essential asymmetry between established community member and newcomer is not something that simply "being on the interwebs" does away with. Since then, I'm here because I want to figure out what I was/am doing wrong.

Looks like my thread turned into The Holist Show, About Holist again while I wasn't looking.

I give up.

Look, I'm sorry. P3nt4gr4m said something about me, and I responded. But, in other news, thanks for the Kathryn Schulz and the Brené Brown TED videos. I especially liked Kathryn Schulz's line: "What does being wrong feel like?" - "Well, as long as you don't actually realise you are wrong, it feels like being right."

I suppose it might be worth another try, if you have the time and patience for it. But I think this thread is pretty much dead anyway.

There is a phrase, with which you may perhaps be familiar,  that accurately sums up the response of the critically thinking Übermenschen to whom you speak at this time: LOLWUT.

I didn't actually know this phrase. But I looked it up. Much to Roger's relief, I'm out of here for a good long while. The reason is that I am devastated by Kai's and Phox's critiques of my story about the origin of resistance to admitting being wrong. But I can't admit I was wrong. Bye for now.
