"We the People" Petitions to Secede

From Gawker
QuoteIn the aftermath of last week's presidential election, residents in at least nineteen states have put up petitions on the government's "We the People" petitioning website seeking the right to secede from the rest of the country.

While the petitions themselves may not be significant, the reaction could be.

Petitions for secession filed from Louisiana and Texas have already received well over 10,000 signatures. Per the website's own rules, petitions that garner 25,000 signatures or more within 30 days require a response from the Obama administration.

Similar petitions from Alabama, Tennessee, and, interestingly, Oregon, are also gaining traction, with each receiving thousands of supporters over the weekend alone.

Other states in which residents have expressed an interest in going their own way include Kentucky, Montana, North Dakota, Mississippi, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, New York, New Jersey, Colorado, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Missouri.

As unilateral secession was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, it remains to be seen if this movement is more than a toothless temper tantrum thrown by armchair revolutionaries
:lulz: :lulz: South Carolina has two of these going around, which is hilarious (for non-Amerispags, SC was the first state to secede from the Union during the Civil War).

I say we let Texas go.

I notice Arizona isn't on that list.  That's because our state is JUST sane enough to realize we'd be helpless on our own, and everyone would be eaten by wild coyotes.

I mentioned that Texas would be at the mercy of Mexico.  For some reason the asshats think that Texas could defend itself from Mexico and the cartels. almost that federal funding for the military bases gone. ..sure thing.

Yeah, their ideas on what a proper defense would cost are laughable.  I've heard these morons make their case for independence, and I say let 'em have it.  They're an embarrassment anyway.

Stella should get out before then, though.

Given that most, if not all, of these states take in more federal money than they pay out in federal taxes, if we let 'em go, the rest of us get another tax cut...  Hm.

Naw.  You'd wind up with Eastern Europe.  Just Texas, because everyone hates them.  The rest can sack up and deal with losing an election.

It IS funny to observe who loves their party more than their country, though.

and now I start the taunting on Facebook.

Oh, indeed. Watching this, if it were to happen, would pretty much be the best.

Possibly Tuesday night... I have an afternoon meeting but will probably be home by 7. Also, possibly Friday.

I agree with the secessionists. If they don't want to be American, fuck 'em. Let's see how quickly the Confederacy becomes impoverished. Sometimes you need to learn the hard way that taxes from blue states are supporting your freeloading state's ass. Don't like welfare moms? I don't like states that leech off the system.

And when all is said and done and they want to rejoin the United States I say we refuse to do so, but rather buy up the property and consider the unpatriotic states to be territories. We can break them up into many very small territories to make the argument that they don't have the population for statehood or representation in Congress.

We will however have to find a new spot for NASA.

I'd rather just leave them as they are, and let 'em scream.  We no longer have a regiment system, so they aren't going to be able to rebel for shit.  Stomp on 'em if they try.  I don't see throwing a whole state out of the union because 10,000 teabaggers signed a fucking petition.

Except for Texas, which should GTFO.
