It was directed at you- and while i feel the commercialism angle it is kinda nice when you get a thoughtful gift from someone. You mentioned atheism though- im usually not a christian myself but engage in the tradition nonetheless. Admittedly sinterklaas poems do make it more fun and makes me a little more thoughtful than obligatory.

Nothing. Atheists don't celebrate Xmas.

:p Jews like money. Mexicans are lazy.

Just to clarify.
Nothing. This atheist doesn't celebrate Xmas.
Sorry, I should have been more specific.

This atheist has no problem at all celebrating Christmas in a completely secular and commercial way.  Commercial vs materialistic.  I love getting stuff for my kids, but it is always thoughtful and not just for the sake of putting something under the tree.  My kids don't ask nor want tons of toys, but when they ask for something, I know it's something that they really want and it is something that is going to tap into their creativity and imagination.  I'll gladly shell out some bucks to make that happen.

Especially THIS year when they are also getting a fat lump of coal inthe form of this suck-ass divorce.

You know what RWHN? Despite all the shit that is raining on you this year that highlighted bit makes you one fuck of a lucky guy. Don't ever lose sight of that.

It's really been the ballast for me.  I have two great, smart, and thoughtful kids.  And I know that while I may have sucked as a husband, I've been a damned good Dad.  So despite everything I can still hold my head high.  (No, I didn't get the Big Book of Cliches for Christmas!)

Sounds like a good anchor to me.

There we go.  I was hoping I wasn't the only one to remember that.  Mostly all culture pre-WWII has been lost.

My grandfather was a miner.  Well, a dilettante with explosives training the government wanted to keep in employment post-WWII, at least.  I think the version he had was Frankie Laine's, but it's been a long while since I looked through his stuff.

I think I learned that one in school, of all places.

Can't remember what it was 16 tons of, though; coal, or some type of ore, I imagine.

Something to do with railroads, maybe.
