They say it isn't or rather that they have been able to achieve the warping effect without the huge mass.  When you described the effect

Oh- i think i have it. I read recently that part the speed of light the relativistic effects are reversed so that as you approach light speed time on the ship slows down but them part light speed the faster you go the more ship time speeds up. Is that part of whats happening here?

Maybe, but the speed of light wont turn a thousand year journey into a few weeks, it will turn it into a 996 year journey so there's something more to it.
