He's not really a nice guy.  He tries to guilt female friends into sex, he doesn't bother to keep himself clean or to lose any weight (and he weighs a LOT) and he tried to rape one of our mutual (male) friends in his sleep.

For srs, Pergamos, ditch this guy like a hot potato and tell him WHY. Unless you want to feel like a fucking prison officer all the time.

Protip- men and women dont think differently. different people think differently. this is where your line of thinking is going wrong.

But Pix! Deep down he's a really nice person! We can make him change through our endless stream of love and codependence understanding!

Well-played, sir.

Well, yeah, except that I was being 169% serious, and the only evidence I need offer is the POSTS MADE BY PIXIE (and others) HERSELF.

Something about guys always wanting to fix shit when women vent to them, etc.  That is correct, but you can't have it both ways, and a politically-motivated statement is NOT a statement of fact, it's a politically-motivated statement.

So saying that men and women don't think differently is Goddamn ridiculous.  Just saying.

We've been acculturated differently, we have different hormones, we have variances in brain structure.
So it's different, yeah.

Probably not as different as my ex-wife and I, but different, and (unlike her) in predictable ways.
Therefore we can find common points where men and women's variances often cause friction.
However, individual variations probably outweigh gender variations.

right. bolded part- emphasis mine. Pergamos is making a broad generalisation that does not hold water over everyone.

the broad generalisations that all XY people do this and all XX people do that because hardwired biological determinism without social factors playing a part is utter bullshit.  http://gender.stanford.edu/news/2011/is-female-brain-innately-inferior. There are, and will always be outliers in variation of that and actually our brains are more similar than different.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYpDU040yzc

male and female brains are structurally different but brains develop like muscles and the parts that get fostered  due to how we are raised and the play we engage in as kids which comes back to culture influencing brains.

When I had my dyslexia test waay back when, the type of dyslexia I have is more common in dudes. As a kid I had no interest in dolls and prams and barbies. I liked lego and cars, he-man and thundercats action figures and read Haynes manuals (DIY mechanic guides for cars) and hated Grease (the movie). I like to fix more than vent. I like to vent, sure, but that's part of the process to fix shit for me, to figure out a solution.

if you make the assumption that all XY people are the same and all XX people are the same and the two are utterly different you are going to overestimate the differences and fuck up in dealings with other people. and you leave out all the XYY, XXY, XXX, X and fun chromosonal variables.

also look up stereotype threat.

People who self-describe as nice guys are universally shitbags.

That's why people who are actually nice do not go around calling themselves "nice guys".

I have a friend who is one of those "nice guys" who gets put in the "friendzone"  He's not really a nice guy.  He tries to guilt female friends into sex, he doesn't bother to keep himself clean or to lose any weight (and he weighs a LOT) and he tried to rape one of our mutual (male) friends in his sleep.

This is often the case.

I'm not sure why we are all friends with him, i think maybe because there is some decentness there and we hope that by continually mocking (and occasionally confronting) him he will eventually grow out of it.  So far we have not been successful.

DTMFA!

Weird porn on the internet anecdote:

So, when my man's away it's weird internet porn time. Don't fucking judge me, I've got tentacles for a face. Anyway, since I get bored super fast with videos of disinterested people slapping their meat together, I started looking at some of the various flash based porn games running around the internet, and one particular variety speaks deeply to the problem thinking of "no = try again."

Some games will have you meet a bunch of girls and try to worm your way into their pants (the protagonist is invariably male, because the porn industry is idiots). You have a range of things you can say, then options for clicking on body parts or what-have-you, and the girl is either super enthusiastic or admonishes you for getting it wrong. And then lets you choose the right option. Even though you just said something horribly offensive. Or touched her in a way that she was not cool with. Because, you see, women are goldfish.

Worse are the ones that are "difficult" where you only get one chance to get things right and then the option to do things with that character is gone forever. Not because it's less realistic, that's much more like how real people act. No, the problem is that you don't really understand what it is the game wants from you because it's super opaque and you find yourself frustrated staring at the screen thinking "WHERE IS THE BUTTON TO HAVE SEX WITH THIS GIRL?" And then you realize they've tricked you into thinking that you have a right to a vagina, and you have to go take a long shower and think about the mistakes you've made in life.

OH GOD GOGIRA I FUCKING LOVE THIS POST!

i WANT TO X-POST IT OVER ALL THE THINGS.

I am going to develop a dating sim now in which no matter which option the player chooses, the protagonist is immediately rejected and the game fades to black because the protagonist respects the woman's decisions and goes away.

Dirty Dancing was sort of a study on how to NOT write, direct, or act.

Grease, on the other hand, is a driblet of Americana, it's sort of the video postcard of what America likes to think of itself as being.
