And yeah, hindsight is only 20/20 because we can see it through the lens of how things turned out.

Memory is also selective, and we tend to forget the small but significant reasons behind some of our decisions.

Yesterday, in one of my classes, we were talking about social change in marriage trends, and it was fascinating to see how many people leapt immediately to "THE PAST WAS BETTER". But then, gradually, other stories started to emerge  that exploded that idea, until the one thing that remained on the board as possibly having been better in the past was "lower divorce rates". And even that's arguable in terms of being better for society.

In the past:

"Well, what did you do to set him off?"

Today (often):  "Get the fuck out of there."

The future? It seems humans do get marginally better at noticing warning signs with each generation. As empirical evidence about what is actually harmful spreads anyway. Consider how climate change was considered 50 years ago, today and what the discussions will be like in 50 years. We probably need to get better at this shit a lot faster.
