HOLY SHIT MR SATURDAY NIGHT HIMSELF!

He basically went mad, and San Francisco decided to go with him.

So he wasn't leading HIS people to the promised land?

No, mostly he just stopped race riots, and shamed the city council into acting like humans.

He was actually a really interesting guy, and an example of how "crazy" doesn't always mean "bad".

Yep.  A bit of a personal hero of mine. Much in the same way that I find Monty Python humorous. But you'd never hear me shouting "Ni!!!" or showing any patience for anyone who did over the age of 13.

Is there a filter for names where Norton gets rendered as Penisnose or something like that? That might be kinda fun.

We have a band here called Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band. Pretty much does what it says. They dress up as marching band and stay on stage. Quite entertaining actually. They did a marching band cover of NIN's "Wish." Took me a good while to place what I was listening to. I posted the word fnord on their FB page and one of the members liked it.

I'm at home because I feel like ass. I'm not sure if it's cold or allergies but I'm staying put for now. Took a bio exam today. I also for math activity have to interview someone in the field I want to go into so I gave the professor that to work on while I was taking his test. Turns out the guy was a postdoctoral fellow where I work a couple of years ago. I thought his name looked familiar. I might ask him who his PI was on Thursday.

I just had to explain how to combat terrorism to a 14 year old girl, for whom English is a third language.  And by "combat terrorism", I mean comforting lies about international cooperation and poverty and stuff.

So, you left the part with the small room and the blowtorch/pliers thing out of it?

Yeah.  Or the part where democracy tends to actually make things worse.  Or the bit about poverty not making a difference.

See, the democracy thing sells in America, because all Americans think everyone else wants to be America, and they expect that "democracy" will turn Afghanistan into Ohio.  It's just that they're held down by some weird cabal of bad guys, you see.

Yeah.  Unfortunately the feel-good liberalism that the UN, and its imitators (like the Model UN, which is what this girl is doing this paper for) will never admit that, mostly because it's crackpot Wilsonianism with a dash of Thomas Friedman.  i.e.; retarded.

Representative government doesn't work HERE, for Chrissakes, and we're the dumbfucks pushing it.

Funny thing is, BOTH "sides" will state flatly that it has failed.  Then watch the fun when you say we shouldn't introduce it in the Middle & Far East.

Speaking of depressing things and democracy, I am becoming intensely annoyed at my students.  Given the chance to have the weekend to stay in Zermatt, their reaction is, aside from three "don't care, want to go clubbing in Geneva".

What sort of complete and utter boring fucks are the next generation going to be?

You aren't really looking at a representative sample, though.

:? I thought poverty made all the differences?
