PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Fire crews responded to reports of multiple explosions in Providence late Monday morning.

Several underground explosions were reported near Richmond and Elm Streets on Monday morning, and firefighters have been on scene and investigating throughout the day.

Eight manhole covers across the area were lifted due to an underground fire, Tim Horan - the president of National Grid - said at a news briefing. Horan said National Grid is working with Providence Police and Fire Depts. to investigate the cause of the explosions.
