Bigotry is abound, apprently, within these boards.  There is a level of supposed tolerance I will have no part of.  Obviously, it seems to be well-embraced here.  I have finally found something more fucked up than what I'm used to.  Congrats. - Ruby

Think Martin Bormann dressed in Maggie Thatcher's knickers.

I have to say, even though I'm really not a fan of Google, I do find the idea of them slapping Comcast around and making them cry with this to be...well, rather delicious.

P3nT4gR4m

I'd also love to see them try to stop it happening, given that the fibre will end up laid. At that point market forces will be forming a demand-tsunami. All the corporations and governments in the known universe couldn't bring enough clout to bear on that, if they worked in unison.

Out of interest - is comcast bigger than Google?

I'm not exactly a fan but I do see them as one of the best in a bad bunch. Doesn't mean they're not shady corporate, money grabbing wanks, just that, in a world where that's the baseline they appear (at least) significantly less fucking horrible than most of the rest. For this reason I'd prefer they were supplying my ... whatever ...

In terms of infrastructure, probably much much bigger. They are in the process of trying to merge with Time-Warner, which is the second biggest cable provider in the U.S. And they already own NBC - Universal, which puts them in charge of several TV networks and a movie studio. Basically, yeah, a behemoth.

Also well known for their shenanigans. My personal favorite is how they used ALEC to lobby states to pass laws that make it illegal for cities to start their own fiber networks. Basically, they won't run fast connections in areas where they don't see a favorable return on investment, but when those cities say, "fuck it, we'll sell bonds and build our own network," they run to state legislatures and get them to shut it down.

In terms of value, though, they aren't even close to Google. I'm thinking this would give Google all the muscle they need if Comcast tries to fuck with them (which would be HIGH-LARIOUS).

Also, Google Fiber is already up and delivering in Kansas City, and hopefully, making its next stop here in Portland. $70/month for 10 gig? Yes, please. Hell, even grandma can pay $300 one time and end up with 5 mbps for 7 years. That works out to about $3.57/month. Yeah, I can see Comcast having a slight issue with that.

When did Microsoft go up against IBM?

Not as much went up against. Just the way it turned out between the two over the whole Dos thing. Just a vague comparison. Out with the old, in with the new - kinda deal.

That was apple.  IBM didn't think there would be any money in software, so they had Gates do it so they could all get rich making desk tops.
