Data mining isn't bad, it's just another absolutely fucking awesome piece of tech or, rather, an awesome approach to using tech.

Some people are bad, so they do what they always do with fucking awesome tech - they use it to do retarded shit.

The "data mining is teh evil" mindset could equally be applied to science in general

Scientists stalk people?  That explains so much...

I thought this was common knowledge.

:?

There's that "informed consent" thing they're always harping about in school.
BOOO! Damn the puritanical ethics committee and their "informed consent" and their hearings, always standing in the way of progress.

Forgive me, I thought the thread was about data mining.

I fail to see any difference between data mining and stalking, to be perfectly honest.

Data mining is a method of analysing massive repositories of data and mapping correlations that would be impossible for a human to see.

Stalking is following a person about. Cyberstalking is collecting information about someone, using the internet.

Datamining a person could be considered a form of stalking.

Datamining climate data could not be considered stalking

Datamining biological data could not be considered stalking

Finding planets which may support biological life could not be considered stalking

Datamining is science. Science can be used to stalk people.

So is science a bad thing?

I think you are mixing up Big Data and data mining.
Big data is the type of thing SETI do. data mining is the kind of thing facebook do.

Seriously, tho. Even within the narrow application of datamining personal information, I see the benefits totally outweighing the negatives but, as usual, a bunch of assholes have used it for nefarious purposes. If that's your argument against, then apply that same argument to pretty much every possible object or technology past present and future.

Consider this - one day you get an email from your GP -

Dear Roger - our datamining efforts show that you have been purchasing foodstuff-X. New research proves a high likelihood that one of the additives in this product carries a high risk of cancer in people who have your genotype. Please make an appointment at first available opportunity for screening and/or treatment.

So, a freind on FB wants to know why data mining is so bad, and is asking for documented instances where data mining has harmed an innocent person.

So weird, I picked up from the context that we were talking about datamining individual people.

Fuck context though, if we just get rid of it Pent is right, as usual.

FTFY.

I know all the hypotheticals -- what my FB friend is asking for are IRL examples.  A case where a purchasing history actually did raise their rates.

Oh!  Wasn't there a guy who was detained because of his book purchasing history?

Probably.  I know I got stopped on every flight I took (which was, at the time, not a small amount) and searched extensively by airport security because I had the temerity to buy books about terrorism.  Not terrorist manifestos or bomb-making manuals, but books on terrorism research.
