Which of the verboten words did you utter, you contemptible beast?

Here you go.

QuoteHamish Howl  BALLS. People who say "free will is a story" are just miserable bastards who are afraid of being alive.16 hours ago · Like

Heron Stone isn't it interesting how some people project their own motivations onto others
that's a reasonable methodology... right... we're all the same... right?  NOTE: WTF?

Costel Stan @Hamish Howl - Actually, Free Will sits (or stands up, if you prefer) on a foundation of stories. Actually, I think the term "illegitimate" is not suitable to describe the "People who say "free will is a story"' and about who you say that they "are just miserable bastards who are afraid of being alive" (the map, in this case), as long as, even though they would be miserable, they have every right to be afraid, at least just as anyone else would. Perhaps fear is that that keeps them alive, or perhaps this is their way. Anyway, they are "legitimate" (or "non-bastard" if you like more). So, I have some serious doubts that "miserable bastards" is a GS term.

(Blue colored text added by me, bolded at the end is the money shot.)

Whooo....

:?  What am I missing?  It seemed pretty clear.

It's them's that's missing the point.

He used "afraid of life" as an argument about "miserable bastards".

Also, no mention of "illegitimate" prior to his own post, so that's a clear misuse of language on his side.

Oh, okay.  I was worried that I was missing something obvious.

I dismissed that as incomprehensible jargon.  I THINK it means "not accepted by this group".

I would say, hold a bit of respect for what they did in their past context... but in a symbolycal sense one has to kill its idols, try to outbest them.... were nit doing them a favour by rehashing their words instead of building above and beyond them.

I just walked out the door and went looking for something less fossilized.

And TBH, from what little i know about science, i do believe in determinism.

BUT, i act and pretend AS IF we did have will and accountability for our actions - theres no net benefit in acting umder assumption of determinism.

I reject determinism on account of Papa Hemmingway and Rudyard Kipling.  I am more than a jumped-up vertebrate.

Assuming a closed universe, we have done and will do the same sequence of actions for basicly, eternity.

I thought that the universe was massive enough to be closed.  Hasn't that been settled?  Why do we PAY physicists, may I ask?

Assuming a bored forum, we have covered and will eventually cover again the same arguments for/against determinism for basically eternity.

I just don't grok the dichotomy. Free will and determinism are two different perspectives. A phenomenon appraised from two points of view. Objectively the fact that all our actions and choices are determined by the complex interactions of molecules. Every action or choice we ever make is utterly dictated by the motion of small things in accordance with the laws of physics.

Subjectively, free will is obvious. Because now we're not looking at consciousness from the point of view of molecules. We're looking at molecules from the point of view of consciousness.

The whole argument strikes me a philosophical wankery at it's most ridiculous. I've a tendency to side with the free will believers tho, just because they exercise their own free will to believe in free will, whereas determinists exercise their own free will to not believe in free will.

Philosophy can be retarded sometimes
