Of course, it's what his mom says, but still. This sounds like it could have been a really nasty manic episode and he was off the meds.

Dammit. I can't hate him as much now.

I didn't hate him to begin with.  The video told me everything I need to know about the kid.

But what's about to happen to the squirrely little bastard, well, that doesn't bear thinking about.

"Billy, when I say that ethics is our number one priority and safety is also our number one priority, you should take that to mean exactly what I said. Also quality. That's our number one priority as well. Don't look at me that way, you're in the corporate world now and this is how it works."

The kid's stark raving mad (not hyperbole).  And they're gonna hang him higher than Haman, anyway.

Mesozoic Mister Nigel

Quotewalked — barefoot and clad in a veil — screaming down Boylston St. near the Boston Marathon finish line while carrying a backpack containing the electric cookware,

So, mentally ill performance artist VERY CLEARLY not just leaving backpacks around, punished for his weird art because our whole fucking world is mad and this is a thing now.
"I'm guessing it was January 2007, a meeting in Bethesda, we got a bag of bees and just started smashing them on the desk," Charles Wick said. "It was very complicated."

On the other hand, reconstructing a narrative retroactively while including facts not entirely known at the time is a great way to score points while shaming people who are anxious and scared.

That was in the description that I read about his arrest when I made my original comment. I had no way of knowing that you guys hadn't read that same description, and I couldn't figure out why you were talking like the kid just dropped some backpacks off.

Reporting was kinda fucked up, like always.  There were no less than 4 completely different, competing stories, none of which agreed on ANYTHING other than his name.

THAT BEING SAID:

Howling for blood because you're scared is the same as howling for blood because you're angry or you hate or anything else.  We're human beings, not cows.  Unless you're on fire, there's no reason not to wait for the facts.

So the story I'm getting is that he was in possession of a backback containing a rice cooker full of confetti, but didn't leave it anywhere and that the unattended backpack that was also destroyed belonged to a news crew?

Again, getting more than one story.

One says he put the pack down.  The other says he didn't.  The footage does not show him putting the pack down.

What boggles my mind is that they didn't expect and plan for mentally ill people doing weird things in that particular time and place.

Going by their internal newspaper, Boston PD are not among the great thinkers of our time.

Or even vaugely competent.

The Good Reverend Roger

Other thing is, I didn't see a lot of people actually howling for blood in this thread.

I saw people (myself included) making predictions on police reactions, etc, but nobody demanding the kid be bastinadoed.  There is a difference between stating a prediction and hoping that it actually happens.

People aren't going to stop reflexively howling for blood until we somehow reform our punishment-fetish society. I don't really know how to make that happen.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

My stance has been, "Christ, what an asshole." I don't want him to be hurt, or have his life ruined permanently by the system. I also disagree with those who want him to burn.

But it's completely unfair to say that first responders over reacted when it initially happened and they should have known it was a harmless art prank.

By comparison, they're not too bad.

They could be Portland police, after all.

Or in England, Chelsea.
