The part about not vaccinating or medicating kids really gets to me. These are the people who just let their kids die of preventable/curable diseases and then pretend it wasn't their fault.

Interesting thing, I saw some people interviewed whose kids were not vaccinated and have gotten sick in the last round of measles, and they have expressed more of a "I didn't think that could actually happen anymore" attitude.

Which implies they were not vaccinating for social approval reasons, not bad signal.

I can't decide which is worse.

"Billy, when I say that ethics is our number one priority and safety is also our number one priority, you should take that to mean exactly what I said. Also quality. That's our number one priority as well. Don't look at me that way, you're in the corporate world now and this is how it works."

What if you raise your own chickens and then use their eggs to produce your own vaccines? No big-pharma, no evil, no problem...right?

Which reminds me, Hey Nigel, when you're flush with eggs again...

Sadly, I only have 4 hens left and only 2 of them seem to be laying, so I have to make the decision whether to obtain more chickens or whether to call it good and let them slowly fade away.

Reading 1-3, I was like "ok, this isn't so bad" - even if 3 is nearly impossible, steps toward it are at least fine enough. Then 4  Not that I'm for mutilating children, but it's obvious why that's there.

And I like potted up as much as the next guy, and am all for research into the benefits of medical marijuana, but I really can't stand the "ALL doctors and prescriptions are evil! Weed cures all!"

In the same way that I have an interest in the "paranormal" and what have you, but then people are like "OH, so you must like that Ghost Hunters show" and I want to stab myself in the eye

THIS IS HOW THEY FUCK YOU.

Everything out of the ordinary is blown so far out of proportion that it's cringetastic to look at.  Everything weird is made stupid.  Every question about modern medicine or corporate practices is turned into some hippie raving.  Concerns about Monsanto, etc, are morphed into some weird Terrence-McKenna-more-stoned-than-usual "FARM YE OLDE EARTH" assbaggery.

So soon, you stop questioning anything, because a false dichotomy has been established, and THE alternative to the status quo is dumb fucking flower child bullshit.  It occurs to me that I have fallen for this trap myself.

This is pretty sneaky...this false dichotomy thing.  Time to go back and reevaluate my views (again). It's been awhile anyway.

I can usually keep this at bay with my 99%-fuckheads theory. I'm not claiming this is accurate or anything but if I examine anything through the lense that 99% of the supporters are probably braindead idiots, it makes it easier for me to judge it objectively.

The irony of course being, that Power defines Truth.

Is balls.

Is it? From what I see, those in power are able to define the truth to a relatively large degree.

There are two forms of truth - objective and subjective, the latter can be, and quite often is, both not true and influence by power. The former is still true but zen applies - if a truth exists and nobody is there to perceive it, is it still true?

I just finished this exhausting "debate" with an anti-vaxer on FB. A PhD in Clinical Psychology no less (I found out what her specialty was from the google, because curiously she touted herself as a "working scientist" and "clinician" studiously not mentioning that nothing she did had anything to do with to discipline we were discussing). One of the 80+ claims she laid out (horrible Gish Gallop) was that a person is more likely to have a bad reaction to a vaccination than they are to get the disease they are being vaccinated against...

PhD...working scientist...clinician...doesn't know how variables do.

Well, clinical psychologists don't necessarily have a hard science background at all.  I mean, one of the therapeutic branches of clinical psychology is the postmodern one:

Quote from: WikipediaPostmodern psychology says that the experience of reality is a subjective construction built upon language, social context, and history, with no essential truths.[65] Since "mental illness" and "mental health" are not recognized as objective, definable realities, the postmodern psychologist instead sees the goal of therapy strictly as something constructed by the client and therapist

She said she was a working scientist, Cain! This was not an appeal to authority, because she said she's just throwing information out there for free thinkers to consider. That's why it was important for her to point out that she's a working scientist...and a clinician...because you shouldn't just uncritically take her word for it...her working.scientist.word....clinician.
