I was surprise interviewed for the post above the one I applied for today.  Which I didn't know was open.  I think that is a good sign.

Oh excellent!

I think my girlfriend's 6 yr old son may be dislexic.  I was under the impression that that's too you to tell, but I was wondering if anyone could point out a "giveaway"

Nothing that you couldn't get from Wikipedia, I'm afraid.  There's some overlap with ADHD behaviours, I wouldnt treat that as a definite sign however.

In a six year old, I don't think anyone other than a developmental specialist can make that diagnosis. However, if the child is having significant trouble with his letters or numbers, and you can't afford an evaluation, it might not be a bad time to start doing some of the exercises/games that are helpful for kids with dyslexia. The most important thing is that he not start feeling bad or dumb because of his problems, and that he understand that reading takes practice, and can take more practice for some people than for others and that's OK. Anything you can do to help make words and reading seem like fun and not a dreaded chore to fear will be helpful.

I've tried very hard to help him get through his homework, but he has an unusual personality trait in that anything remotely challenging frustrates him to tears and he gives up.  I think it is related to having a 7 yr old overachieving sister who likes to prove she is better than he is.  But seriously, he would rather watch YouTube videos of people playing Mario Bros because actually playing the game is too hard.

Younger siblings exhibit that fairly frequently, and it's because they see their older sibling being good at something but they never noticed them being bad at it and practicing to get good at it. This can lead to the idea that people are "just good at" things, and that since they aren't "just good at" something that they can't get good at it. If they can see someone starting out bad at something and working at it until they  get good at it over time, that can help, otherwise you kind of just have to talk them through it.

Some aspect is also temperament, as well.

Tucson. Imagine you have the Schroedinger's Cat scenario, except that you have THREE indeterminate states. "The cat is dead" and "the cat is alive" AND "someone fucked the cat up real bad".

We're the last option. Unless you look in the box. In which case we shank you and stick your body in the dumpster. And there's no "live" vs "dead" problem whatsoever.

I've noticed that Monkey has gotten a lot better at reading since I started letting him play Skyrim a lot and made him stop making new characters.  He reads out loud, and he can get through most of the words and spells out those he doesn't so I can help him out.  It gave me the warm fuzzies this week when he got through a main plot point conversation and didn't pick any options willy-nilly; he read at least one before picking it, and some of those there were shorter options.

I feel like I'm at that point in my personal life, and honestly, I don't know what I should do about it at all.

Didn't make it into the internship. :( They had us writing code for a week in a classroom with our fellow candidates.

But that's okay, that was some fierce competition and I made some friends. I'm just going to make them regret passing me over by writing some killer code and getting hired on at another company.

I need a montage.

Aw! Bummer. :( YOU WILL OVERCOME.

Thanks. :)

Tonight I met a Bay Area tech recruiter who seemed unreasonably interested in my fledgling programming skills and I got hired to help teach robotics to middle and high school kids, so things are looking up!

Demolition Squid

So at 11pm last night I got an email from my boss saying he wanted me to 'dig around and put together some research' on the business cases/implementation plans of digital strategy for councils. That actually sounds like the first fun project I've had to do in a while, so I shoot back asking for more details - what with there being hundreds of councils and almost all of them having some form of digital offering, and no timeframe given.

He says he wants it ASAP and he wants me to start with the 'good' ones. Okey doke. Not... the most helpful response but whatever. I haven't had something to sink my teeth into for weeks, other than the incredibly depressing world of social care. I go to bed, and when I kick off in the morning I hit it like a ton of bricks.

Four and a half hours and I think I've produced the best report for them I ever have. It lays out five major projects, what they're doing, why they're doing it, who to contact for more information. I even made sure to pick five ones that were 'good' for different reasons - here's one with really great social media feedback! Here's one that started from a low point and went to a high point! I'm feeling really great about this, huzzah!

I send it off. 3 minutes later I get an email - 'I just wanted the documents please'.

And now I'm back on Reed.  :lulz:
