Understand is a nice way of saying leverage them as a resource they can exploit.
The right in europe differs from country to country, in Greece its military heritage and people who's lives have been damaged by austerity. In France its a racism thing. In the UK its a return to an era that may never have existed the way they believe it did.

In the UK, the promises which have been made, were lies and I feel sorry for the people who voted for the brexit, because some of the promises that were made were good promises. I have no idea if trump could deliver any of his campaign promises, most of them, I wouldn't want him to, be they tangible things like repealing the medical bill, or prohibitively expensive ones like the wall.
