What would I have to do to completely remove android from a tablet and install Fedora or Slackware in it's place (or really any version of Linux that isn't the two bad versions: Android and Ubuntu Mobile)?

I wouldn't.  Fedora and Slackware are designed for use on a full PC, they aren't going to run very well on a tablet.  If you can find a Linux OS that is designed for use on a tablet that you like there should be installation instructions on their site.

The point is that I don't want a tablet OS. They're all, without exception, absolute shit! I want something that will run the real versions of GIMP and OpenOffice and Firefox and Dwarf Fortress - however slowly or unstably it may do so - and I want all traces of Android irrevocably purged from my device and to never deal with Google Play, the Apple App Store, the Windows App Store, or any product that has been in any way approved by said stores ever again.

And it doesn't have to be Slackware or Fedora; Ubuntu would be fine to, but I specifically chose not to mention it for fear that people might think I meant Ubuntu Mobile. It doesn't even have to be a Linux distro, my only concerns are for it to not be designed for a mobile device and not be made by Google or Apple (really the optimal situation would be to install Windows 7 - or Windows XP, or Windows 95, or however far back I have to go to find a version of Windows with a small enough footprint to fit on my device - but I accept that that's a pipe dream)

So....you want a laptop?

...yes! but in a flat pocket sized form! That's what tablets were supposed to be before the course of their development was perverted by Apple and Google!

And that brings up a good point they didn't pull this kind of ridiculous bullshit when laptops were invented; they didn't say "this is smaller and a little less powerful than the current standard, so let's totally reinvent the wheel with a shitty new operating system that won't run normal programs or let the user easily access system files"

Not due to the blessing of some phony god, of course. But because, you are enlightened by your own intelligence.

Get a Surface? Not particularly a cheap option but they (should) run Windows 10 now which is the same OS whether it's on tablet or proper computer.

I hear the accuracy of the stylus you get is pretty good too if that's what you're using GIMP for.

What I am hearing, here, is "I want a tablet that is also fully-functional computer but I only want to spend $150".

Really? Because it was my understanding that with the Windows 8 Surface tablets this was actually a lie and they actually ran something called "Windows RT"

I don't expect that; I expect to end up with a tablet that is a very low-end computer only*

On a tablet you possess the steps would depend on your specific tablet, but on many you can install Debian ARM edition directly or build a Gentoo system if you want to both learn more about linux and spend a week deciding exactly how you want each detail of your OS to work.

Or you can get a Pi 2 from adafruit.com for $40 and a touchscreen of whatever size, put them together whatever way you want, and run official Raspbian, desktop OS.  That's what I did plus two usb snes gamepads for emulation.

I agree that Android is shit.

Basically what trix said.

Acquire ARM version of your intended distro.

Using device-specific sorcery blow Android away.

Jerry-rig the Linuxes into your tablet, maybe developing and flashing a custom bootloader. Brick and recover the device a few dozen times. Still require an Android stock kernel to even start running.

Once you're running, lament the lack of compatibility with any of your hardware, unless you're also interested in writing new drivers, I guess

I haven't done any Surface, but my understanding is that Surface runs RT and Surface Pro runs full Windows 8 (now 10).

You are not going to have a nice time putting a Linux distro straight onto an Android tablet, unless it's as a hobby project like install Linux on your microwave.

trix

The size of your headache will depend jointly on your ability to find a reliable source of information on your specific tablet and your ability to carefully read and follow the instructions given.  I've been doing this kind of thing for years and never bricked a device.

That said, the warning about hardware compatibility is accurate, much depends on your specific tablet and how "open" it is.  Some devices are fully supported and a breeze to do this with, others will produce the outcome Paes predicts.

So you want a tablet that has all tablet functionality deleted?

Have you considered getting one of these? https://jet.com/product/9c7fc841ce764c9ca3458c73a04fad4a?
