TGRR,
Is a part of this thing.

Exciting! Have office political shenannigans calmed down, too?

Somewhat.  Which is a cause for worry.  My boss relies on me for technical skills, analytical ability, and leadership, but hates me like I got caught fucking his dog.
I did warn you that the dog fucking would get you into trouble.

I know.  I have listening issues.   :lulz:

Anyway, the first bits of the DESI prototype are on site, a mere month late.  There's talk of a shake up at Berkeley, as the DoE seems determined to get this damn thing running, and the kids that are building it lack the experience to back off and look for new solutions when a cherished hypothesis turns out to be crap.

The kids will still be doing it, but there will be a more experienced scientist in charge.  This is bog-standard for a DoE response to delays, but it usually happens after 6-12 months, not 3-4 weeks.

If roughing it is so great, why don't you just move back to Roughingitstan?

Because I'm in dutch with the Roughingitstani Mafia, which is much worse than owing them money because in their culture chocolate confectioners are ... rare. This is mostly because the penalty system was instituted by Ben Franklin on accident during some drunken pillowtalk in a continental bordello. Said some shit that could make a ice-cold professional sadist blush, giggle, and throw-up with giddy nervousness. I mean there's no way Mr. Franklin could have possibly known that it would be taken as serious policy, much less instituted during The Great Roughingitstan Putsch, commonly accepted from remaining forensic records to have begun circa 1792-1802. I myself find this "history" awfully convenient given that Franklin "died" in 1790 by all commonly accepted accounts and the interval of a mere two years in this estimate simply doesn't rule out shit as far as I'm concerned. So...

I guess the short answer is that they use a LOT more wasps in their penal code than you'd think and it's not like the US of A is gonna care, much less be able to extradite me.

Enjoy California, Wizard Joseph.

Cheers sir, thanks! I'm seeking a healthier mode of living and expect to enjoy the struggle as much as any profit. I and one of my most trusted and competent friends are going to work together on the venture and attempt to put down roots in the region.. I have never actually lived outside of Wisconsin before. It's a big first for me on several levels.

It's worth mentioning that roughing it is not healthy.

If it were, we wouldn't have constructed cities.

Exactly this.

It's very likely to work out more along the lines of me working in a nearby town and having a regular base for my amenities while my absurdly woodsy partner does his thing with my full support. I have no trouble chopping down to the bare necessities, but they DO be necessary for me. I will be basically camping for a couple weeks until I get myself set up. If all goes south somehow I can still just head back to WI for the price of a train ticket.

Also... I know for a fact that many of my ills are from my mentality and I require much more exercise and mental challenge both to begin to get better. I NEED to push myself at this point.

I will be very careful. Thanks for the concern guys! :)

6 billion people roughing it is way more than the planet can support, it's certainly healthier in some respects.  More exercize, interaction with nature, which we are evolved for.  Not so great as far as nutrition goes usually and there's a ton of dangers that civilized living does not include.

There's a part of me that would ALMOST rather just face a bear in incidental mortal combat and die nasty in the woods than deal with some of the humans I'm leaving behind. It seems a nice, uncomplicated and honest sort of death by comparison.

See now what I'd probably actually get is a leg-breaker fall down a ravine while I'm looking for a good place to take a shit and the tree limbs that broke me and my fall  have wasp nests in them. Nothing faux-noble there. Just a lot of sad sobbing and swatting noises until done.

I did the thing yesterday. Twice. I presented my research for the Ronald McNair program, and then I presented it again to fulfill my Honors thesis requirements, and now I am finally actually officially done with my degrees so that they can be recorded so Ford can talk to PSU about my financial aid this Fall. My position is guaranteed, but I would rather the Foundation pay for it than have it come out of my lab's grant. I am also in the pool for a TAship, which would be even better, although I might have to teach a class I haven't taken, which will suck. ERRRRBODY I know seems to have gotten stuck with A&P whether they took it or not, and I don't want to teach that. Which most likely means that I will be.  :|

Oh and also I bought my boyfriend a Mandela coloring book, which he is enjoying properly.

About the same, actually. Although some of the images are pretty raw.

Cain

I'm having one of those weeks where straight up quitting right now is looking quite appealing.

Amazingly, management are not the cause of this - the students are.  Allowing overnight guests was a terrible idea - now students think it's an entitlement, rather than a favour, and are actively trying to game the system to get around the restrictions we've placed on it.

But since our own management wasn't thrilled by the idea anyway (once again this came from the colleges, who want to have their cake and eat it too), it's not clear anything will change, even though every single night since last Thursday has involved at least one major overnight guest incident.

Cain

Haha, spoke too soon.

Management decided to take a dump on my head over last night, including doing such terrible things as: reducing the workload for the dayshift and moving on a non-resident troublemaker.

Hilarity forthcoming.
