The only condition that I could see could qualify is a prolonged illness, but you'd never give someone a passing grade on it, if they were to supply supporting evidence of this, you might allow them to defer the year.
Lab attendance was an automatic fail for the year if it dipped below 55% for a subject for us. I asked for compassionate leave for a couple of modules when my dad died and they allowed me to take them in the next semester.

Yeah, if they have an illness or major issue come up, they'd get an incomplete, allowing them to fulfill class requirements later on.

I had a student that I have never laid eyes on because they have never set foot inside my lab email me because they are going to be seeking accommodations through the DRC. As far as I know, there is no disability for which a reasonable accommodation would be "never coming to class or turning anything in". They may find themselves a tad bit disappointed.

Kinshasa is lovely this time of year.

It's a terrible thing when you have to explain your references.

Take today for instance. My wife's had a bit of pain resulting in an overnight stay in hospital. Pain coming in waves, bit of a shit, times when she can talk and laugh and times when she.... can't. All resolvable and should be fine in less than 24 hours. Good stuff modern medicine.

So suggesting that if the current treatment doesn't work, we can always look at the "Old Yeller" option didn't exactly get the response I expected from the 20-ish and late 40's-ish nurses.

"Old Yeller?"
"What's that?"
"Err... You know, the film?"
"Never heard of it"
"What?"
"Pretty famous film, a kid and his dog..."
"Is it new?"
"I've got a dog, let me find my phone"
"...and the dog gets rabies....."
"Oh no!"
"My dog's got a disorder too"
"...What? No, the kid, you know, shoots it"
"WHAT"
"OH MY GOD"
"WHAT"
" (Untranslatable gibbering)"
"WHAT"
".... It's a pretty famous film"
"GET OUT"
"(Still indecipherable)"

In my defence I really don't think this is an obscure reference.

It isn't over here, I think, I'm pretty sure it's part of most school's required reading. I remember watching the film adaptation it in... school...?

Yeah, almost everyone I've ever met, even if they've not seen the movie, knows what happens and would get that reference. It is considered a necessary classic.

No.  I'm going to do something rotten to a random person in the street.
