I'm somewhat conflicted. On the one hand I feel like I should get out of this country while the getting's good, on the other hand I'm in a swing state and feel like the United States needs me (Plus I don't know where I'd go to; most places I don't speak the language, and I want to steer clear of the commonwealth of nations because they tend to have onerous censorship laws; like for the longest time The Driller Killer was banned in Britain because it was supposedly over the top, and that movie's boring as shit, and you still can't get any good movies or videogames in austrailia).

I'm not being run out, no matter what the consequences are.

The only answer anyone EVER needs to give for the question "Why don't you GEEUT AYYYOWT?" is "Why don't you make me"?

BTW, speaking of swing states, here is what needs to happen to have the best chance to fix this mess. We need a lot of democrats from non-swing states to move to the swing states and turn them blue. Alternately, we need a lot of democrats from a cross section of blue states to move to one or two of the low population red states and turn them blue

Californians tend to move other places.  If they'd do it a bit more strategically we could turn the country arouind.

John Melendez, a podcast host known for playing pranks also known as "Stuttering John," says he managed to get an Air Force One phone call from President Donald Trump, who appears to have thought Melendez was New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez.

If accurate, the call, which Melendez recorded and posted as a podcast episode, would be a stunning lapse in procedure and security for the White House.

But there was some genuine information in that call:

"I want to be able to take care of this situation every bit as anybody else," he says of the crisis at the border. "I'd like to do the larger solution rather than the smaller solution."

He also says he will make a decision on his Supreme Court nominee in the next two weeks, or "over the next 12-14 days." That timeline is in line with what a key Trump adviser told BuzzFeed News on Thursday.

Also, I hope everyone's paying close attention to the NATO summit in 2 weeks time, to be followed (possibly very closely) by Trump having a meeting with Putin.

In anticipation of the NATO summit, Trump has once again been escalating the rhetoric against the alliance.  He reportedly said to Sweden's Prime Minister, when informed that Sweden is not part of NATO but sometimes holds military exercises alongside it "that maybe the US should consider doing the same".  More recently, he stated NATO was as bad as NAFTA (?). 

The US Ambassador to Estonia, a country with a large ethnic Russian population in its eastern provinces, also quit today, in protest of Trump's statements.

Now, this could just be Trump's retarded attempts at playing hardball with the NATO alliance....but I don't know.  With the way he's been acting in the past month, I have the feeling there is something more going on, that potentially something really bad is about to happen.

3 days later, in a meeting with Putin, Trump recognises the Russian annexation of the Crimea in return for a drawing down of Russian forces in Syria.  He officialises the recognition, while Russia does not significantly reduce its Syrian footprint.

I've heard that Russia's interference in the 2016 election may have been more a matter of seizing a sudden opportunity than some long-planned undermining of the Western international order, but the way Trump just happens to behave like he's a full puppet makes me wonder. I'm not an expert like some people, but it still seems like there's a titanic shift going on, the kind if thing that people 500 years from now will say "there's no way it happened that fast or that obviously," and they'll be wrong.

My feeling is there are elements of both here.  I honestly think that people are discounting the idea that Russian military intelligence is a) staffed with loons who think they really are in existential conflict with the west, and b) are connected to far-right militias fighting the Donbass and the overall European far-right scene far too readily.

Translation: GRU has basically gone full 1960s CIA.  It's running black ops all over with deniable cut-outs in the form of hackers and far-right groups, without any necessary direction from the Kremlin.

At the same time, there's definitely an official, concerted effort.  If the UK government ever actually bothered to do a full on Parliamentary investigation (which we are still loathe to do, because it might upset Trump) we would find more links between Brexit, Russia and Trump than would make anyone comfortable.   A former police officer has done a lot of investigation on this front already, and found some extremely troubling parallels, including some quite damning forensic evidence (bot farms deployed to swing Brexit repurposed for Trump).  Before that, we had odd electoral instability in places like Bulgaria in 2013 and 14...test runs, perhaps?

The mix of covert ops and enthusiastic amateurs supported by state elements is likely what makes this appear as weird as it does.
