So what can the democrats do now that they have the house, and what did they miss out on by not getting the senate?

No Senate means impeachment is definitively off the table - it was always unlikely, with the required number of votes for it to be passed, but without majorities in both it's a non-starter.

With the House, the Democrats can, if they so choose*, completely stymie Trump's legislative agenda for the next two years.  Any legislation that needs to be passed will now require a Democratic vote to be passed, and that would allow for concessions to be wrangled.

They also control the committees, which means they can launch more investigations into Trump**.  In particular, Devin Nunes has been voted out, and Adam Schiff, who I believe is projected to win his Congressional race, will be the new Chair of the Permanent House Intelligence Committee.  Schiff has been pretty tough on Trump and Russia in the past, I'd be surprised to see him slow down now.

Ah ok, the legislation hamstring is a good win. What I am hoping for is that he gets frustrated with blocks and amendments, tries something stupid with executive orders and gets into hot water.

Sorry. I'm under a pretty large amount of stress currently between personal life and the political Hindenburg we have going on, so I'm rather more fragile than I'd like to be.

Even if I wasn't, I apparently have a knack for making ambiguous statements and having no capability for making it clear when I'm serious or not, offline and on. So it was kind of an existing exposed nerve anyhow.

Edit: Belatedly realized I should clarify: that's not a sarcastic response in the least. It's better someone got some entertainment out of a basically harmless act than everyone involved feeling like an awkward, guilty asshole.

This way it's just me feeling that way, and that's basically my default state.
