Our SQL database is written in Delta, which is a crippled up version of BASIC used for air conditioning controls.   :lulz:

TGRR,
Sending our neckbeard to go learn Python.  GRIND, CODE-MONKEY, GRIND!

Is Python used industrially?

What is he going to do with the Python? Replace the Delta, or just interface with it?
It's used a lot in data analytics and has eaten into matlabs ridiculous grip on universities.

Well that's cool.

I know a little Python, probably not enough to get paid for doing it. I kind of wish I had taken Computer Science instead of all that industrial bullshit in college. Every now and then I'll search for jobs looking for Python. Usually one or two will pop up, generally web based stuff. Looked just now, and damn if there isn't an "elecromechanical systems engineer" position in the area looking for Python and C#. I'm totally not qualified for it, but it's interesting to see.

When it comes to coding, my advice is - fuck qualifications and just blag it. Best motivator I have found to learn a new language is when I'm on the spot and pretty much need to suss it out by the end of the month or I don't get paid.

It will be.   :lulz:  It's balls-perfect for SCADA systems, and I have no idea why people haven't adopted it.

We plan to interface and eventually replace.

I literally thought it had disappeared for days. :lulz:

I've been working on a shooting gallery for about 2 years now. It's got an Arduino Mega, and a Raspberry Pi B+. The Pi is running some Python, and the Arduino has whatever language Arduinos use, some kind of C. I'm just now getting back into programming it. I got most of the software written right out of the gate, then spent a year and a half building the thing. Most of my experience with Python has been in writing programs to control servos for what basically amounts to interactive puppet shows.

What was your major?

B.S. in "Electromechanical Engineering Technology", Graduated in 2009 when the economy was in the shitter. I couldn't even get an interview for engineering jobs, so I took a job repairing cellphones for $12 an hour, and stayed there for 5 years until the job evaporated. While on unemployment, I signed up for an industrial electrical maintenance program at the local Vo-Tech college. It was mostly the same stuff, but with a lot less math, and zero early 20th century French literature. I just graduated a couple of months ago.

There are a lot more maintenance jobs than engineering jobs around here. I'm hoping to land something in maintenance, then work my way up to something a little more like engineering.

Any pinball companies?  Pinball is filled with tons of electromechanical things.  We just had one company here that went from repair into a making new games.

Not that pinball is a huge market or anything, I'm just kinda fascinated by how they work.
