You know, I was actually going to do a topic on this, but you have all read my mind, again...

LMNO

Well, perhaps you have a slightly different angle.

I'd still like to hear it...

Cain

Heh, that came out worse than it was meant to. Just seems of late everyone has been doing that to me :D

Well, I hadnt fully thought it through, to be honest.  I can see the appeal of both points of view.  The problem is, I would say, the co-option of symbology at sacrafice of the message.  This is the global capital age, in order to make new "products", ideas are bought and sold, ideologies for sale.

Then again, that could be the usefullness. Maybe I have too much faith in the strength of the ideas, but I can see the appeal of marketing execs lapping this up, only for it to backfire against them as people actually get the point.  Of course, they probably wouldnt.  But maybe for every 20 people who didnt get it, one who wouldnt have otherwise heard of it would.  Perhaps.

And we all know your veiws on Punk, Kung....

Punk as a musical genre = dead, dead, DEAD.

Punk ethos as reflected in the views and practices of the disaffected, disenfranchised urban youth = VERY much alive and well.

hip-hop is the new punk anyway.

...but with juicier asses.

c'mon dude, you know I'm not talking about Nelly and Ludacris and that kind of shit.

WTF?  Why not?  Not Nelly, but Ludacris.  He has a sense of humor, at least.

I like Luda just fine, got a couple of his albums (first two), but he's not the kind of hip-hop I'm talking about when I make that statement. He does not represent the spirit of DIY.

Nelly sucks my balls. I've got MAD better flows than him.

I would fucking Nelly anyday.

Some yahoo yelled at me, saying 'GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH', and I thought, "I'm feeling generous today.  Why not BOTH?"

I worked the door for a Digital Underground show at Jimmy Z's in Everett when I bounced there. Got to smoke the hippie lettuce with Shock G. after the show. good times.

Cowboy Troy is tha absolute shiznit too, but my favorite "new" group (since every new group has been doing it for 5 to 10 years before we ever hear them) is a toss-up between Grayskul and Boom Bap Project. Both just dropped new albums which aren't their first, but their first that are getting any sort of national distribution (Rhymesayers). both are from my hometown, and one of the dudes in Grayskul is a friend of mine, so I'm pimpin' them hard, but they're worth checking out. Angry, anti-governmental at times (especially Boom Bap), apocalyptic sounding, and about as far from "bling-bling" as it gets.
