In North Korea, this forum wouldn't be banned, it would be revered and taught in schools as a palatable and preferable version of Western history. And in many ways, that's all the truth the children of North Korea need

Eldora, Oracle of Alchemy

You know who's coming to get me?  My cats, my hubby and my son.  It's a toss up any night who will rob me of the most sleep.  Add to that my hormones and well, I was so exhausted and my son was out of town, I slept for 10 or 11 hours last night.

Oh, and I think someone once mentioned a 50-year social pendulum... WHich means we're still about 5 years from the turnaround.

Hoshiko

Only, in terms of what most of us like to think of as a "system" (law, politics, social order,) it's more of a 7 year pendulum. Which means that right as you're getting hopeful, you're just about to get fucked again.

But I figure, if I'm not making any type of difference whatsoever, and I have no hope of ever doing so, at least I'm not going to go crazy sitting on my ass and worrying about "what if?"

As a wise woman once said, sometimes you have to see the pointlessness and still keep your purpose in mind. Because you have to get through the day somehow, right? Might as well do it playing whatever awful odds you were given and enjoy yourself that way. Hell, they can take whatever they want from you and own whatever parts of you they want, but there are some things they can't take. And it's those things that I think most of us librels/activists/rebel types put most stock in.  horab, I think that you were wrong when you said that there's nothing someone wouldn't do for money given the circumstances. I think most of us would do plenty, sure, but to think that there are no limits? It's been proven throughout history that people do have their personal limits, and some of them will defend those to the death if necessary. And those little shows of rebellion have had devastating effects on order before, if done at the right time and in the right place. It's not necessarily about winning, it's about knowing your limits and also knowing how far you would go to defend them, and living your life accordingly. I think if more people knew that, and DID that, things would be different right now. There's a certain freedom in that, and it's probably the only freedom that can't be taken away. Everything else is gravy, really.

Because if there's one thing about oppression, it's that it always tries to take too much. And that's when people fight back. I think it's easy to get jaded about the times we live in and think that all of this is something special and unchangeable, but the truth is that it's all been done before, and the only thing left for us to do is pick our roles and play them. Because if you've been paying attention for the past 10,000 years you know where all of this is going. The big boys might seem all-powerful and in control now, but they're fucked by history just the same. The real question is: Which team do you want to play with? How do you want to spend you little time here?

It's called a circle of influence. And right now I'm willing to bet that most of us here have a pretty small one. But so do the higher-ups, in the grand scheme of things. When you get right down to it, aren't we pretty much equal in the ways we interact and impact each other? You never know where that ripple effect is going to take something that you do. And your small influence doesn't have to stay that way, if you work hard enough and believe in what you're doing, however misguided that may be. It's not all black and white. Just because something doesn't have the social effect of an atom bomb doesn't mean that it doesn't contribute to the big picture. Hell, look at how many stupid, small destructive decisions are impacting our lives daily. There must be a flip side to that, correct?

Besides, some of the most beautiful things out there are pointless.

And Chaplin, I'm sorry, but you can't really claim defeat until you're dead. You have to earn it, first.

Well, I have very little patience with conspiracy theories about the Jews.

They've been kicked around enough, don't you think?
