Any band that become famous and sells a billion records is over-rated. No one is that good.

Quote from: Rev. What's-His-Name?A lot of genre titles fall apart once you start examining the bands who are allegedly in said genre.  For example Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains are so far apart musically yet they were both considered grunge.  Perhaps a better title would have been "Seattle Slew" Or "Rainy Rock"  Then you could throw in Queensryche and Candlebox.

Speaking of Queensryche.  I think they are getting desperate for in 2006 they will release their next album entitled:  Operation Mindcrime II.

NO ONE in the Seattle music scene likes Queensryche, or considers them to be in any way associated with said music scene. I threw Chris DeGarmo out of the club I was bouncing one time just because he had the temerity to respond with "don't you know who I am?" when I asked him to pay the cover charge.

Candlebox was so fucking GHEY that they MOVED from California to Seattle just so they could take advantage of being a "Seattle Band". Again, no one in the scene with any credibility would even give them the time of day.

Some yahoo yelled at me, saying 'GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH', and I thought, "I'm feeling generous today.  Why not BOTH?"

Queensryche = so not cool. (and not grunge, either)
Candlebox = grunge, because they marketed themselves that way.

East Coast Hustle

yeah, I'll concede the point that there was a "grunge scene" because record labels and shitty music journalists and wanna-be coattail riders said there was...I just feel compelled every time this comes up to make it very clear that no one in that scene at that time who had any talent or credibility EVER considered themselves to be in any sort of cohesive scene, other than that they all sort of recognized that there was a freakish concentration of good bands in the same backwater city at the same time.

also, for anyone who's interested, the best bands from that era haven't even been mentioned.

go download yourself some of the following:

Mother Love Bone

Green River

Skin Yard

Tad

Screaming Trees

Hey, speaking of bands that were awesome before the whole Grunge label came & fucked the scene like a syphillitic whore, have you heard of Squirrel Bait?

Some of them went on to become Slint.  But the first Squirrel Bait album is fan-fucking-tastic.

Irreverend Hugh, KSC

Turd's right.

The whole "Seattle Grunge" scene was a media fabrication.

There were some good bands around though. Some of them listed in his post.

Pirates are very badly overrated.

I think Geoff Tate's best days are well behind him.  I saw them a few years ago opening for Iron Maiden in Portland.  (Halford was playing too but I missed him)  Maiden slayed but Queensryche was just pathetic.  Tate really struggled to get the high notes.  Actually, he seemed to struggle with the midrange stuff too.  Although I have to give them credit, since they were opening for Maiden they knew better than to play any of the tepid crap from "Hear in the Now Frontier".

I didn't think his best days were ever in front of him...

I liked Operation Mindcrime.  There were a couple of good songs on Empire.  Everything before Mindcrime was cheezy power metal.  Everything after, and including parts of, Empire has been just pure cheese.  But, I do have a soft spot in my heart, or perhaps my head, for Mindcrime.

Operation MIndcrime wasn't totally sucky, and that's the nicest thing I'll say about anything Cheeseryche did.

also, I have it on unimpeachable authority that Geoff Tate sucked some cock to get their first album produced.
