For Roger: There's a book called Ancient Traces by Michael Baigent that reviews certain 'mysteries' that might appeal to you. The rediscovery of the Coelocanth fish, the fossilized footprints that are supposed to show humans contemporaneous with dinosaurs, some odd African jungle monster thingy, some odd Canadian 'nessie' type beastie.

I can't vouch for it's provenance but it might soothe the pain.
