Look out Portland, here I come with my dangerous memes! :lulz:
I have observed and interesting phenomena:
Of all the people who have been exposed to the meme, "most men hate women, and most women think they deserve it," nearly every single one have ended up hating fictionpuss.
11/12ths of fictionpuss deserve it
Fucking hell, let's get scientific on this shit.
Anybody who puts these up should get the figures on domestic violence in their area before they put up the stickers, and then a month after.
Cainad, unless you make stickering your full-time job, statistical fluctuation will make any effect meaningless. This would only make sense if it's a VERY CONCENTRATED effort of several people over a limited area and a long span of time (say, a year or five), and I don't think anyone here hates fictionpuss quite that bad.

Spreading bad ideas is a bad idea.
Way to miss the point. Cainad suggested doing science on this. I pointed out a methodological problem with that. End of story.
Also, this memebomb will do more good than bad, if it does anything at all, and you have a very very strange world-view.
Ideas are not actions.

I think it's relevant - until such time as models exist which can accurately predict the impact of meme - everything is shades of hypothetical opinion. Maybe the moon is made out of cheese, and maybe reading this will make you kick your granny. The probability of either of those events being true seems so low that it's not really interesting to talk about.

MEMES! :argh!:
So... where in the world are there five spags who live within fifteen minutes' walking from one another and are crazy enough to pull this off?
@Fictionpuss: how about you prove your claims that this is harmful? My opinion (not claim or statement of supposed fact) is that this won't make any difference but *might* cause some spags to reasses the way they interact with people. Yours is apparently that people who see this memebomb are likely to become more misogynistic because of it - a much stronger assertion. Also, mine is just my opinion, and I'm not going to tell anybody what to do or not do because of it. Nor am I going to spend any time "proving it". Suck it. Unscientific fuckwit.

Incidentally, that idea came to mind not (just) to get to Godwin's Law as quickly as possible, but because I got most of my books on Nazism, fascism, right-wing extremism, Marxism, Communism and anarchist terrorism from a very excellent torrent called "Bad Ideologies".
Also, it would kind of put me out of any possible future work, since my main skill is analysing, dissecting and theorizing on some very bad ideas indeed.
On a slightly more serious note, this kind of thinking about dangerous memes is itself incredibly dangerous. Cf. case of that guy Hicham who got (or was going to get?) deported from the UK for studying CIA (?) material on terrorism... If we can't be allowed to deal with dangerous ideas because they're too dangerous, they ironically become much more powerful and capable of causing harm.
(The above is my subjective opinion and I'm not going to cite or "prove" anything, ever. In fact, this is going in my sig now.)

Goodbye, cruel thread!
Not sure if its the same guy, but I know a student at Nottingham is getting deported to Algeria. He was, like me, studying terrorism, and, like everyone who studies terrorism, read the 1996 Al-Qaeda manual, hosted on the US Department of Justice's website. Unlike everyone else who studies terrorism, he was then accused of accessing "terrorist material", thrown in a cell for several weeks, and is now being forced to leave the country.
Because god forbid we have an expert on terrorism who is a Muslim. He might prove the clash of the civilizations and the naive idea that Islam is uniquely violent as a crock of shit.
I'm gonna put a bunch of these on me tourbus.

Could be. Usually though, terrorism tends to be its own department, or at least only loosely associated with IR, since there is very little real theoretical crossover between it and IR theory. If they study criminology or deviant psychology there, it might easily come under those fields instead.

No, because the DoJ isn't part of the UK government (yes, this was an American government website) and because he was reported by someone in the IT dept at the University.

Ah. I haven't been a part of that department since '93, so I wouldn't know for sure. I was fairly taken aback when he said he wanted to study there for that particular thing. Having been poli sci IR for 3 years myself...just found it odd. Some excellent professors there, though, and damn did I learn a lot.

Actually, could you go to my (former) church and explain this concept in-depth? I said that in a meeting once and
was given a letter a week later informing me that I'm a heretic.
Sure thing. Where's it at?
3545 Chestnut Dr
Doraville, Ga 30340
Wait... a letter?
srsly- your church members sent you a letter? you roll(ed) with some pretty mellow christians, it sounds like.
i had one guy almost beat my ass for saying that the resurrection and the virgin birth were the same metaphor.
he was mostly pissed that i said "metaphor".
Isn't irony wonderful?
Yeah, in the Churches of Christ excommunication is done through what they call "Marking and Avoiding" which basically means that the leadership of your congregation informs you (and the rest of the congregation) that you are "walking disorderly". This announcement figuratively "marks" you as a heretic and lets everyone know that they should literally avoid all contact with you. Of course, since you have to be informed of this in person, they don't actually mail the letter to you. They read it aloud in a closed door meeting and then hand you the letter. And if you're loony enough to go to another Church of Christ you're supposed to tell the leaders there that you've been marked somewhere else so that can decide whether or not you're allowed to attend church with them.
Hah. :lulz:

What if the people exposed, are already misogynists? Does the idea reinforce their position?
Or make them more likely to examine their barely suppressed, but ultimately impotent need for sexual validation, from their recently deceased Mothers?

I disagree. One of the oddest parts of the success of the civil rights movement was the TV show
All in the Family, the central character of which was an apologist bigot. He was made to look stupid, just by voicing the opinions of apologist-type bigots everywhere. It made being a bigot look silly. It worked.
For a half-hour a night, Monday through Friday, that show broadcast bad ideas.
And it moved race relations forward by about 20 years.

I think that's different because you're not spreading a bad idea if you're mocking it. If you want to use that analogy, the stickers were the equivalent of throwing racist propaganda into the world, just to see what sticks.
Context is central.

There wasn't much mockery necessary. The show just showed racists as they really are/were, with their pants down and their idiocy hanging out.
