I have temp banned Pope Lecherous and LuciferX for racist insults aimed at another board member (Nigel), although the aiming part wasn't necessary.
The admin group will of course have to decide as a group whether or not to make the ban permanent.
I suggest an open vote, but if ANY admin is uncomfortable with this, we'll take it to PM.

Well, in real life i confront bigots all the time, be it against homosexuality or race, and even though im of a light frame, i do not tolerate it and get physical if needed.
Here in the internet we only have words and board administration and enforcement, which isnt on my hands, but i do have the choice of participating (although not as frequently as others) in a given place according to its tone and permitted practices.
This isnt directly about me obviously, but i can leave in solidarity for a fellow member being harrassed for what they are (being harrassed for what someone does is different, because we have a choice in what we do, but we dont have a choice in what we are), which shouldnt be tolerated

Really, I don't think it's that at all. I think it's a matter of format.
Most forums I use have a large number of small, discreet, topic-centric threads. Here, a lot of content ends up in a small number of large, non-discreet, broad-topic threads that are hard to follow and require hours of back-log reading in order to be informed enough to make a post.
Because most people don't want to read 200+ pages of replies in order to make a post on the internet, many people probably just go elsewhere to fulfill their needs.
Regarding the banning thing and all that...I'm not even going to go near that. Too many ways to get poop on my fingers with that...

Yeah, it would be a weird direction for this board to go in. Too much gray area. And there are solid and legitimate arguments to be made for banning racist slurs, sexist slurs, homophobic slurs, and slurs against the disabled, but I don't personally think this is the environment where those kinds of rules are productive. I also think that PD has functioned pretty well for a very long time using our own individual opinions and arguments to shape the culture, and part of that culture is a very relaxed rule set when it comes to banning users.

We've had cases of scumbag ex boyfriends stalking girl members on this site. Had them send threatening messages. Had one or two members threaten other members kids. Threats of violence come in pretty frequently. That's more what I meant by harassment but I'm sure it's a debatable point.
I think directing slurs of those kinds against particular members (especially in a vindictive and repeatable fashion) does constitute harassment, and so is already covered by our rules.
However, there are also other options for dealing with such a person, so while it would eventually constitute a bannable offence, it probably wouldn't do so in the first instance, and of course the wishes of the target of the harassment would have to be taken into account (such as whether they are happy to put them on ignore - or are uncapable of doing so due to being an admin etc).
Language based rule-sets are tricky and complex. I don't like tricky and complex, because it leads to rule-lawyering and increases the possibility of making an incorrect call. Behaviour based rulesets are far easier, and as far as I can see, this sort of rule would be redundant based on the interpretation of harassment above.

Funny you should say that ECH, as I have the opposite opinion. It's due to my own experiences shitting on Nigel and getting shit on back that have taught me that she can take care of herself, and thus, I refrained from insulting, trolling, and otherwise putting PL down, even after it became clear that he did understand why his words were offensive and was just trying to shit everywhere.
I didn't advocate his original ban either (until the spamming), as I agreed with Nigel's POV, but I also didn't agree strongly enough to mind if his original ban had stuck. I guess I'm just kind of :kingmeh: on the whole thing.
I do think much of the generated response was due to a tendency PD has sometimes, of piling on, which has less to do with gender and more to do with mob mentality.

IIRC, the problem with haggis is that we can't import products containing sheep's lung because of BSE fears (I don't think we can't import British meat products at all because of this). I'm pretty sure we can make it domestically, but I'm unsure of this, and I doubt there are many domestic producers to begin with.

However, it is worth noting that we can import Irish breakfast meats. It might be specifically UK. There is a restaurant in Jamaica Plain that serves haggis.

I've helped make/had American-made haggis, and we totally used the lungs. You have to leave the windpipe out of the pot when you boil everything together. No, it wasn't fun, I wanted to fucking vomit. And it wasn't good, but I don't like organ meat to begin with. We also went to a good Hispanic butcher store in Rhode Island (Armando's btw, for you New England spags. MEAT. ALL THE MEAT. GO.) that knew exactly what we needed, and special ordered it all for us without writing it down. Totally bizarre. :?

What I know is that it tastes spicy and goes well with Scotch. It's one of the rare combinations where whisk(e)y doesn't kill the spicy.
I've described it in the past as sheep without the meat.
I'll probably eventually suck it up and try it. At the end of the day, it is edible, it only sounds disgusting. And truth be told I used to find black pudding disgusting on principle and it's now one of my favorite foods.
I've never even tried kidney... I should probably start there before I go to 'Organ-galore Served In Sheep's Stomach'. Right? Right?

3. PL was going to be banned. PL posted some racist shit.
Roger proposes that he is morally opposed to posting on the same forum as a racist so something(a ban) needs to be done.
I disagreed, that someone shouldn't be banned for posting racist shit and that it's not an either or we could fuck with him plenty without having to use admin tools (that's where the lazy comment came from).
And that's basically as far as it went, the rest was going round in circles. I wouldn't agree with the ban and roger wouldn't compromise his morality of not posting on the same forum a racist.
Now in the meantime PL immediately went on to start posting youtube song links in all manner of threads. Was told he would be banned if he kept it up, and he kept on doing it so from the looks of it he was trying his hardest to get banned one way or another to, I don't know, martyr himself.
Everything else is just arguing about what's been said. I'll clarify one thing which roger doesn't believe but keeps coming up, and I'm not to be trusted so don't listen to me

Which tells me that everything I was told about dealing with privilege was never sincere.
