Today I created a Facebook account; I had a question to ask of the university's fruit tree program, and this seemed like the easiest way.  (I had an account a while back, but I never used it, and was getting annoyed by the spam, so I deleted it.)

Anyway, I set up the new account, and posted my question.  I came back a little later to check for a response, but my browser autocompleted to https://www.facebook.com/HolyNonsense/, since I guess I'd followed that link a while ago.  And since Facebook doesn't let you see much of anything unless you have an account, I decided to browse a bit.

I scrolled down the Holy Nonsense page, and then YOUR ACCOUNT HAS BEEN DISABLED.
  :)

There was no reason given for this, but I guess that's normal.  I clicked through to request a review.  It asked for my picture to confirm my identity, but since I'd never sent Facebook my picture to begin with, I sent a random picture of a cat sitting under a zucchini plant; they can make of it what they will.

It will stay disabled.  If your account has been around a while, it will compare your pic to pics you have loaded.

If you don't have pics, it will compare your pic to pics of people who have been banned.

If it doesn't find a match, it allows the account.

The problem with their model is that they are making it really difficult and annoying for anyone new to join up.  That won't bite them for a while, but it will in fact bite them.

Let me explain. Dead-internet theory suggests that the internet has been almost entirely taken over by artificial intelligence.

I had expected AIs to be more intelligent.

Why?  It's not like there were any superintelligent aliens programming them or anything; just other humans.  And we all know how that goes.

AIs would either

1.  Get more intelligent via experience, given they clock a lot faster than us, or

2.  Crawl right up their own asses in a fit of electronic narcissism.

For that matter, about 90% of my interactions here are just murdering bots in the waiting room.

If you got to any of the old usenet sites, they have LOADS of traffic.  Hundreds or thousands of posts per day.

And every single post is a bot trying to sell things to, or phish, other bots.

It's like they don't even need us anymore.

Get that through your thick skulls numb nuts.

17 years later, it's nice to look back on this and remember what happened to Tao immediately after this thread.

EDIT:  Thread is no longer 23 pages long.  Not sorry.

If a system was needed to give an escape mechanism for the rich and powerful this absolutely has  already been implemented, the trick would be figuring out where its been used

The best you could do is look for missing footage.  Even that could be jimmied.

But here's another idea:  Have one person appear to be in multiple places at the same time.  Or have one guy show up on video where he isn't, and not where he is.  If you need to set someone up.

this seems like it would be easier to pull off.  could also just establish an alibi - not necessarily set someone up.

"Sir, our cameras place you at the active crime scene"

"yeah, so?  your cameras also place me at costco at the same time."

"I was at Costco when that happened."

"Not according to the security cameras you weren't."

So, what you are describing there, that has me very worried, is that the Taliban are now more organized, war hardened, know the US playbook and are back in charge, in short, Afghanistan is in a much worse place then where the US found it.

We're known for doing that sort of thing.

So, interesting concept in the new files.

"Ghosting" (not the social concept).

A person moves through a crowd.  As cameras ID his face, they turn away or shut off, sending a signal to other cameras to do the same thing, then erase the footage.  Static cameras just shut off and erase footage.  People in the vicinity get bot sales calls that distract them for 30 seconds.  Wifi objects in the area drop coverage, distracting people.  Phone cameras shut off (Apple already has this feature for police).  The person walking has been trained in the usual ways of not being noticed (clothing that doesn't stand out, not making eye contact, etc)  His Uber is always on time, allowing him to keep moving to wherever he's moving, without standing around.  Never has to wait for an elevator, that sort of thing. The chip in his credit card changes the card's unique ID from one valid account to another.  OLRs ignore cars he is in, the same way cameras do (deleting memory).

Far more difficult to implement than it sounds, but possible.  And I can think of a hundred uses for it.

BTW I'm at the hospital with the wife now... baby's on the way! we've been here for about 30 hours, but we're getting close to showtime.

Congratulations, Cram!

You never get to sleep again!
