"We accepted their congratulations with good grace and proper modesty, but I felt then as I feel now, that I would have given my life to save Dresden for the World's generations to come."
- Kurt Vonnegut, Armageddon in Retrospect

But I wasn't even planning to go to Dresden

Too tired, too lazy, too busy blearily hitting the refresh button and the "read new posts" button to say howdy?  Boy, it's a good thing this hasn't turned into another form of television, right?  Ho ho!  At least THAT can't happen here!

Damn, that was a nasty wake up call. Just what I needed.
Time to find the Slack.
Thanks, Dok!

(Lurked here for ages, probably posted once or twice)

QuoteToo often debates about AV are less like political arguments, and more like scientific discussions, where people get lost in a language of proportionality and preferences, probabilities and possibilities.

Of course, some of these things are important. But for me, politics shouldn't be some mind-bending exercise. It's about what you feel in your gut - about the values you hold dear and the beliefs you instinctively have. And I just feel it, in my gut, that AV is wrong.

This from the debate on changing our voting system in the UK ... from our current Prime Minister, David Cameron. Because politics is about not challenging your instinctive, knee-jerk "beliefs", don't you know?

I think we're mostly just people who read this site for the awesome ideas and humour, but don't have the effort to keep a constant presence on the site (I know this is the first time I've posted in ... ages, and never really got around to introducing myself back then either. And if I should post more ... well, probably not. Just about everyone is only bearable in small doses after all.)

But it does mean you all have far more fans of your thoughts and style of discourse than you know, so there's a flying pat-on-the-back for you all to not really care about because it came from someone don't know and probably never will.

About damn time. Not that anyone will actually do anything about it, satire is much safer. Well, the BNP might want to, but I cant read their pamphlets without laughing and/or ranting. (Not that I've put any effort into doing anything, or even seeing if anyone is doing anything. If I somehow replaced the government with wise, benevolent leaders I'd get much less entertainment from the news.)

Without these threads, I might have some kind of belief in the UK government. Like, that they have principles or something. Thank you Cain!

As a general comment, the suppressed annoyance in the average restaurant kitchen will make whoever learns to convert it into electricity a very rich person. Its hot, its sweaty, people KEEP TELLING YOU TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY, the serving staff keep dropping things and complaining. At the end of a long shift, the average chef can punch through sheet steel.

But unless the dishes are all pre-prepared (for a large set order, or something), it shouldnt be a huge deal where you want your sauce.

Leaving a legacy ... yeah, guess some of those are. Also, thats something most people try to do in some way ... from epitaphs to simply having children to carry on your name.

Also, seems I forgot your mittens. Here they are!  :mittens:

Also, that song is too damn catchy. Keep playing it back through from the 'it feels so good to be alive, and on top', that bit is too good. Yeah, the megalomania bit ...

Of course, in a way we are all victims of our own species' success. We see people at the top and wonder how they got there (who hasnt thought 'I could run the country better than them, why cant I try?'). Many ape them, hoping the magic will work for them too, or hope to somehow attract the attention of what seems like a demi-god.

You forgot to mention one obvious thing though - this forum. We have our own little place on the internet, where we meet up with generally like-minded people and can be almost certain that we will outnumber any others that happen to migrate in. Some of us have the power to go further in defending our little fort, kicking out invaders and erasing their traces.

And what about the pyramids? Todays monuments? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mile_High_Tower ? All by people who want to make as big a mark on the world as they can, simply to say 'I was here, look how important I am'. Leaving footprints (not to mention a flag) on the moon, the various people that have stars named after them, species as well, even the odd element. Ok, so thats why you missed some stuff out. Its almost the whole list of human achievement.

Ultimate power is destruction though? Of all the power available to us, perhaps it is. Certainly the most permenant, from the point of view of the thing destroyed.
