Can somebody explain why this is happening? Politics over there confuse the hell out of me.
The party's announcement, after a meeting in Dublin, follows a decision on Saturday by PM Brian Cowmen to quit as leader of his Fianna Fail party.
Mr Cowen had said he would stay on as PM until the election, a move opponents had described as "farcical".
The Greens' decision wipes out the ruling coalition's two-seat majority.
We don't have a PM thats England we have a Taoiseach, but that aside:
Our government is collapsing, the gov was FF with the greens in coalition. After a confidence motion last week the Taoiseach Brian Cowen remained leader of his party FF.
The next day six ministers stepped down. Their roles should have been reassigned to new people and that was the plan, but on the day the greens blocked the move (which they can because they are in the coalition).
Now this is the only move those innefectual fucks have made their entire term, and its one that fucks the country. We have to wait for the election which was coming anyway before there will be a new person assigned to the roles which are of vital importance (one of which was minister of health).
BC left his party and is now an independant Taoiseach, probably because he is so hated it will save his party some votes in the next election.
In all its a disaster.

They have to wait until the general election in the first week of march, it takes that long to get one organised. Though what is really funny is that the Dail has to be called into recess before candidates can campaign, and that wont be happening until the same week. So the country is blessed in that they won't be putting their faces on every lampost and electricity pole.

We're not, every government since the inception of the republic has been either FF or the slightly more right wing FG, the two parties are otherwise indistinguishable.
Heh, that sounds highly familiar. You might as well not have left the Union, replace the Greens with the Lib Dems and imagine the FG were in power and you'd have exactly the same situation.
Although at least you wouldn't have to look into George Osborne's dead fish eyes.

Is Ireland like Canada in that if the ruling party or coalition falls and loses a vote of competence you have to go to the poles?
Cause we're been on the threat of an election for some time now. Only thing preventing them is polls show Canadians don't care.
The Irish Republic is to hold an early general election on 25 February, its first national vote since the bail-out.
Prime Minister Brian Cowen announced that parliament was being dissolved, more than a year before his term in office was due to expire.

It makes sense, their one and only action for their term was to block ministers from being appointed to empty positions and make the country wait until after an election for them to be filled.

Sinn Féin
Last government was FF and Greens. It's always either been FF or FG in power, with a little help from the smaller parties.
In this election, Labour think they have a chance at getting into power alone. But as far as I can tell, the smart money is on an FG/Labour coalition.

Unfortunately, FG is indistinguishable from FF barring that they are a little more right wing, and that they are led by a fucking moron called Enda Kenny. I'd almost vote for them if he wasn't the leader.
I'd say I'm going to vote independent, just because whoever wins we lose and I don't want them to have strength of party.
