Title: Calling all nerds
Post by: Nephew Twiddleton on June 10, 2014, 03:15:25 AM
So, I have this friend, who's recently come back into our lives, and he's a hardcore Star Wars fan, which is fine, but he thinks that he is somehow betraying George Lucas if he even entertains the idea of liking Trek.

I have no idea why. I like both. I like Trek more, but I like both.

So I want to troll the shit out of him and bonus points if I turn him into a Trekkie.

Help a nephew out.

I got my Star Wars nut friend good when I told him everyone knows the Death Star is really a Borg Cube. The gnashing and thrashing ensued for days. Until he looked it up and found out the Death Star predates the Cube by 12 years. :P Still, it got him hooked.

I've already made the Borg pitch on grounds of cyborg space zombies.

However, that might me a good root. Make him argue his case through comparison. Which would force him to watch Trek. Appeal to the fanboy.

I could make the argument that one drone on the Death Star would be the end of both the Empire and the Republic, in one transport, which is a technology that neither have. An assimilated Death Star? Fucking hell, the Feds had a hard enough time keeping a single cube from destroying the UFP. Locutus was the weak spot.

I don't give a shit how hardcore he is, within a few years he'll despise everything related to star wars.

Why?

Disney paid $4 Billion dollars for it. Rule of thumb for investment - Look for 3X the value back.

$12 Billion dollars worth of star wars later any pleasant memories will be dust under the onslaught of Yoda & Co marketing the living shit out of everything that can be sold.

I can't see why liking one would be a betrayal of the other.

I mean, Star Trek is clearly science fiction, so they're not even the same genre.

I can't see why either. And not even because they're different genres.

And at least with Trek, you're not getting shit like Greedo shooting first. Or little fuzzy teddie bears with spears defeating an Empire that has the technological capacity to destroy a planet with one shot.

Twid as always I recommend mockery. Start telling your friend whenever you're together that you can't enjoy something because you like some arbitrary other thing.

"Ahh, sorry, I can't eat Mexican food; I'm an Italian fan."

"Can't read that buzzfeed article you sent; I'm strictly up worthy."

"I'm not worried about MRSA; viral infections are more my thing."

I was that guy.

Harp relentlessly on the prequels, and how Lucas utterly betrayed everything remotely good about the original three. Make sure to stick in the fact that the Thrawn books were ruined by canon before the other ones (except Splinter of the Mind's Eye, but that's what you get writing fan fiction between movies like that). Bring up the shitty stuff from the special editions. DO NOT let him weasel out of feeling bad. Lucas did BAD THINGS and if we don't talk about it other people will keep doing those bad things.

The only appropriate entry points for this guy will be the occasional episode of TNG or the JJ Abrams movies. TNG because I assume he's around our age and LeVar Burton, and the new movies because they're less Space Communists and more Bad Boys In Space.

You should both watch some Firefly if the process is too contentious. Every nerd loves Firefly.

I like this idea.

Also, I quoted a part of the entry on George Lucas from Wookieepedia explicitly stating that George Lucas considers himself a Trekkie on his FB.

Then I followed up with a clip of Luke Skywalker shouting no.  :asshat:

I think part of it is that it takes some of the badass away from Solo. That, and Greedo is an implausibly lousy shot. I know that for some reason that defies physics, beams of light don't follow straight lines, but c'mon, a blaster can't be THAT inaccurate.

Hmmm. Might backfire. He might be like, "Of course he does, he's a Trekkie."

The goal here is to get rid of his ridiculous idea that just because he already likes Star Wars means that he's obligated to not like Star Trek. It's like a Megadeth fan who hates Metallica on principle rather than on their own merits.

Megadeth's basically a Christian conservative thrash metal band so fuck 'em anyway, but that's because they're them, and not because I'm a Metallica fan.

Well . . . there's always the 'false dichotomies are for grade-schoolers' argument. He's a big boy now and can handle expanding his tastes in a genre he enjoys. The world will not end.

Although I really like PopeTom's suggestion. I'm tempted to do that to my roommates. Their heads will EXPLODE.

That won't work. Tried it by pointing out that he's the only person we know who thinks this, and that Villager, Aaron, and myself are perfectly fine with liking both. I even said that I am most definitely a Trekkie and not a Star Wars fan but that I rather liked Star Wars regardless. Doesn't matter. Compare it to choosing sides between "Twilight" and "Harry Potter". Both of those are absolutely stupid retarded and people are drawing lines of battle over that shit. Or "Team Emo Werewolf" vs "Team Stalker Vampire". :P

Me: Are you Team Edward or Team Jacob?
Him: What?

To be quite honest, I loved Enterprise and hated episodes 1-3.

Which means, at least from my perspective, while I like Star Wars, I consider the least liked Trek to be good, and the prequel trilogy to be terrible. Though I'll say III was way better than I and II.

If I was going to go mmmm.... Trek actor/ress though...

I'd have to say Jolene Blalock (Subcommander T'Pol, Vulcan attache to the United Earth (not United Federation of Planets) starship Enterprise, NX-01.

Followed by, funny enough, Connor Trinneer (Commander Charles "Trip" Tucker III, chief engineer USS Enterprise NX-01, and Subcommander T'Pol's romantic interest)

I recently got Purple Fraggle into ENT, and we've been debating who's hotter, Trip, or Lt. Reed.

Dorn is just a badass. He singlehandedly redifined the word Klingon. Brilliant acting. Patience of a saint, considering the makeup job.

Truth. I loved watching the evolution of his character through ST:NG and DS:9.

I was disappointed. Villager and I went to a Trek theme party and there was a song about Worf in the background giving away that he was going to marry Dax. Now, at this point she had gotten to DS9 (I started her on TNG, and we're eventually going to get to TOS), and had taken a particular interest in Trills, so, she was all about Dax like I would be as about Commander Shran, since I have a thing for Andorians, and Worf wasn't even on DS9 from her perspective yet, and I was like "oh god... I hope you're not listening"

And then suddenly she whips around and goes "Worf and Dax get married? Wait, Worf gets transferred to Deep Space 9?!"

She has no clue about Ezri though. No sad, sad, clue.

I wouldn't blame him if he did.  Star Wars fans are, by and large, assholes.  I mean, you can argue so is George Lucas, but there's only one of him, so it's far more tolerable.

You're wearing a different uniform.

I like him just fine.

See, I've seen both Titanic and Rocky Horror, but I've never gone, OMG  YOU HAVE TO because there's plenty of stuff that I haven't seen myself, nor will ever see because there's just too much stuff to watch. I also have plenty of friends whose opinions on Trek are totally unknown to me, or are indifferent to it. It's this guy's flat out refusal that caught my attention, and it was something that he brought up. If he'd said something like, "I haven't seen Star Trek, and I probably won't" I'd have been like, alright fair enough. But he said "I haven't seen Star Trek, and I won't because I'm a Star Wars fan." Which just strikes me as incredibly silly.

Star Trek is brilliant sometimes, lazy at others, and each series has a little formulaic thing of it's own going on. I liked Enterprise, once I got over that theme tune, and people didn't seem to take to that one so well. But seen them all so many times. So I'm looking through a bunch of other old Sc-fi shows, and I really couldn't believe I'd totally forgotten about Lexx. If you've never seen Lexx then you must either ewatch it at the earliest opportunity, or just lie down on the nearest patch of ground, and never get up again.

If re-incarnation is real, all those who never saw it, will be turned around at St  . . Ganeshi's Gate(?) and told, "The only thing you needed to do with your life this time round was to watch Lexx.  What did you do instead? You re-watched fucking "LOST"  to see if it made any sense after a second sitting and Dude, I'm Ganeshi, I hardly EVAR watch TV, and I just KNOW Lost never even made sense one time! Now go, live, love and enjoy your next spin, but remember" And that will be that.

It was an Aussie / Canadian / Brit collaboration, lots of episodes, but this is one of the most bizzarre and best. Battersea Power Station, A living Dead Man, a Dead Living Girl, Stanley Tweedle, All in Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. Kind of. And supporting roles? Think TCC's Annual gropy lulzfest.  Oberon and Titania, (Titania must be that WyldeKat, but a Dwarf. Oberon is . . . .well, King of the Fairies) Go go, watch it. 4 ten minute sections.

Bookmarked for obvious reasons.
Also, have you seen Farscape and what was your opinion?
Farscape is my favourite SF series.

ETA Farscape is about a guy that goes through a wormhole and goes insane because of a lack of human contact. OK, he also has lots of adventures and shit, but the character development is key.

Hang on, I thought Lexx and Farscape were pretty well known.

Drop whatever's on your list, the last 4 episodes of Farscape and the film follow on are probably some of the best sci-fi from that era. Scorpius consistently pulls of Garak levels of magnificent bastard with class. Lexx had it's moments too, but quality varied wildly from episode to episode.

No wait, I take that back. My dislike of BSG comes from the prolific presence of exactly those parts of religion which irritate me.
Nevermind, just my private prejudice, not a real judgement of quality.

You will enjoy many parts of Red Dwarf.

I have only ever encountered blank stares when i mention Farscape, so i wouldn't call it well known.

Oh yeah, watch farscape from the start for sure. Just saying those 4 episodes and 2 specials brought it all together really, really nicely. Better than most, I'd say. The Scorpius conversations throughout the series were always a high point too.

Lexx, again, is best watched from the start. You'll probably make your mind up about the whole thing by the end of the first episode either way.

BSG, both old and new left me rather cold. Just didn't work for me.

While this is turning into nerd general, anyone else seen the new Red Dwarf stuff? It's not what it was, but there's certainly worse.

I liked the BSG remake, including the religious stuff. One of my favourite scifi series of all time. The prequel, however, "Craprica" - fuck me how could anyone make a show so shit?

The only thing about Caprica that bothered me was the whole copying someone's personality by Super-Googling them.

As spin-offs go, Crusade was ok. I had a sad when they cancelled it.

I've never seen Titanic or Rocky Horror Picture Show, and I probably never will because, well, shit, I've gone this long. Also because after I reached a certain point of just not ever happening to have seen them, people started in on the BUT OMG! YOU HAVE TO!

Do you actually LIKE your friend, or is he just a personal project?

Sure, but so what? In the grand scheme of things, does his reason for not wanting to see it even matter?

The reason I ask is that it sounds like you're making a thing out of it, making it into some sort of big deal, when the guy just doesn't want to watch it. It doesn't really matter if his proffered reason is silly; I mean, maybe on some level he likes to say that because it makes people flip their shit trying to get him to watch it (that would be my reason for saying something like that, and in fact it makes me feel like I need to throw something like that in for next time someone goes "ZOMG I can't BELIEVE you've never seen Rocky Horror!").

If I'm misunderstanding and he's the one making a big deal out of it by constantly talking about how there's no way he'll ever watch Star Trek because he's a Star Wars fan, then I retract my comments.

So what will change if you get him to watch Star Trek?

It will show me that he can open his mind about stuff, mainly. Dude's a geek, and geeks are pretty particular. If he hates Star Trek on its own merits, then that's just a matter of taste. But he's never even watched Star Trek because he thinks he's supposed to hate it. He's wearing a uniform, basically.

Mostly I see it as a bit of banter. I actually have no expectation that I'll ever be able to get him to watch it. I wouldn't say that he talks about it constantly, but I started trying to sell him on it when he tried to sell me on watching something he liked, and I was like, tell you what, I'll watch that if you watch a Star Trek episode of my choosing, and he was like, "forget about it." And it just kinda went from there.

Sounds reasonable enough, then.

Something about DS9 being a trek spinoff and the idea of boldly going where no one had gone before and then just hanging out there and not going anywhere else didn't sit right with me
:lulz:
Still a good show though, once you get through the first two seasons.

I would say the same for most Star Trek series.

I did love the first 2 seasons of Lexx, cheesy as it was.
Lexx was totally over the top, that's what I liked best. and Zev was sooo fahckin' hawt! She was probably the main reason anyone had any sympathy for Stanley Tweedle at all. All through every episode, he's like a puppy looking for a leg to hump and knowing he's just going to end up licking his own balls in the corner again. But that Robot head quite often rescues some of the weaker episodes. I think Lexx and Farscape are less known in America because neither of them are American.

I wasn't too sure about Farscape at first, it shouldn't have worked at all really, because it seemed to cobble lots of bits from lots of other Sci-fi shows together, but it was awesome. Especially Crichton's long messy descent into Skorpius induced insanity. The characterisation was far more 3 dimensional than Star Trek as well. When I first saw Rhygel, I thought fuck this, a Jim Henson Puppet is never going to be right, but he ended up more believable than many Trek stalwarts in much less time. But Claudia Black and Ben Browder's smouldering chemistry is what really stands out for me. Mostly because Claudia Black is so stunningly gorgeous.

Dargo goes from stampy psychopathic shouty "Imma kill some fucker" to softly spoken, gentleman chivalrous warrior overnight when Chianna shows up, and he gets his leg over, that's funny. Skorpy becomes a well fleshed out character too, once he's got his feet under the table of Crichton's brainstem at least. The only complaint I have was that they cancelled the show too early and didn't have time for a decent ending.

Oh, and the unsung star of the show must be Dargo's prehensile tongue. :o WTF?

I thought Lexx was pretty good for something that was basically soft-core sci-fi snuff porn.

That's probably the best way to sum it up.

Which Zev by the way? They switched actors a few times.

BOTH.

But mostly the 2nd one.
