:lulz: I was gonna post that one but IMO he owned that song to the point where his version is now the "original". Because in keeping with the theme of my posts ITT, Bob Dylan can DEFINITELY suck it.

For Whom the Bell Tools as covered by Moonsorrow, cause yes Metallica can definitely suck it.

The original is still pretty good, and one of Metallica's best, but Moonsorrow completely owned it in this version.

You'll forgive my lack of links as I'm at work but here's a partial list of my favorites, both good and blasphemous.

Misirlou - Dick Dale (yeah, his signature song is an adaptation of an old folk song)

And while we're on Dick Dale - Sloop Jon B

Baker Street - Foo Fighters

Harvest Moon - Elliott Smith

London Dungeon - Prong

Thirteen - Danzig (he wrote the song for Johnny Cash, then performed it, so maybe not technically a cover?)

Hurt - Johnny Cash (and pretty much the whole American V:  When the Man Comes Around album, with standouts like Personal Jesus and Bridge Over Troubled Waters)

Across the Universe - Fiona Apple

Feeling Good - Muse (only works because they are NOT TRYING TO BE NINA SIMONE)

And finally, a great cover lost to the ages by a now defunct local band called These Bones - Toxic.

Also, like Hendrix with All Along the Watchtower, Hurt is now officially a Johnny Cash song.

Shit yeah.  I don't even hate Trent Reznor or Nine Inch Nails like I do Bob Dylan, but that song fit Cash like a goddamn glove.  It's why I think Thirteen is better as a Danzig song than a Johnny Cash one - it never sounded like it was made for him quite the same way.

:lulz:  I didn't think that would be a controversial one.  Wasn't the dude from Prong in Misfits and/or Danzig for a time?  I don't know, I just dig the industrial metal take on the song.

I've got this album Violent World - A Tribute to the Misfits.  It's got some damn decent covers on it.

Burnsey if you found a working mp3 of Toxic I'm going to be fairly fucking impressed.  My only file was lost when I busted my old player and I think a big chunk of my friends from the area lost theirs over the years as well.

Tommy Victor played with Danzig about a zillion years AFTER Prong covered London Dungeon.

So, not really relevant. That said, I do like the Prong version.

I disagree on that last one, the only band that has been able to do Enjoy The Silence better was Depeche Mode themselves when they re-mixed it for some compilation.

I used to think that, but it's a user illusion. Since I listened to the majority of everything Prince ever made, I realise that:

1. Prince touches a truly astounding number of things.

2. A highly unusual proportion of those things do indeed turn to gold.

3. Possibly only to assuage rumours of superhuman stature, but he has made some atrocious shit.

She's a cover machine.  she did Smells Like Teen Spirit too, which was, different.  I was never a big Tori fan and in fact I think she was kind of ruined for me back in the day.  I was in college when she broke through, and I was running this Open Mic show on campus and all of the girls would do Tori songs but go way over the top with them to show how edgy and original they could be.  So I guess it ended up turning me off to her.

Marilyn Manson's version is Marilyn Manson's best song.  (or in my humble opinion their only good song)

But the original is better, it had that cold, sterile 80's feeling that MM couldn't recreate in his wildest dreams.

I personally think Coma White (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQPJYnr48yU) is his best song.  Hell, the album it comes from, Mechanical Animals, is probably his best album from a critic's standpoint.  Although Holy Wood is by far my favorite album simply because of the reason why he created it.  He released it a couple of years after the Columbine school shootings when everyone blamed him for the incident (despite the fact the shooters didn't like him or his music), and he decided to essentially go into hiding for a while.  Out of nowhere he releases Holy Wood which is an attack on virtually every aspect of American culture.  He attacks the media, how they glorify violence and turn insane killers like the Columbine shooters into celebrities.  He attacks the fact we love war and how any president who is assassinated in office (JFK, Lincoln) is instantly turned into "one of the greatest presidents ever."  As well as the fact we obsess over said assassinations.  He attacks religion, saying that people worship one of the most violent images out there (the crucifix).  He attacks the "Guns, God, and Government" aspect of our culture.  Hell, he even attacks our sports, saying our favorite sport (football) is one of the most violent sports out there as well as the violent-sounding name of the songs we play at said games (fight songs).  Manson having the balls to counterattack when it seemed everyone was gunning for him (no pun intended), the take-no-prisoners ass-ripping nature of his criticisms, and the fact the album practically oozes his anger blew me away.  To this day I still think it's one of the coolest moves anyone has ever done in my life and has earned my respect for him even if his music went in the crapper after that.  (Although his newest album, Born Villain, is pretty awesome and definitely closer to his "Big 3" albums than his last few albums).  Anyways, enough Manson fanboyism...

I kind of agree.  I love the music of the 80s.  And I think the Eurythmic's original is awesome.  I don't know if I'd say it's better than Manson's version though simply because the two are almost completely different, personality-wise (if that makes sense).  If the goal of a cover is to sound exactly like the original than yeah, I'll agree Manson failed in that aspect.  But I like the fact that he took the original and made it his own.  I guess what I'm trying to say is I think both are equally good but for different reasons because it might as well be two different songs.  He also did a cover of Personal Jesus, but I think it's complete shit because he did the exact opposite of what he did with Sweet Dreams.  His cover of Personal Jesus sounds exactly like the original (only with different voices, of course).  In my opinion, you're not going to do better than Depeche Mode especially if you keep the cover exactly the same as the original.

I think a lot of New Wave covers fall short because that 80s, synth-feel of the songs was kind of essential.  There are exceptions of course.  I forget the name of the band, but there was this Chill-out, loungey kind of band that did a decent cover of Blue Monday, and I also liked Frente's version of Bizarre Love Triangle.

I guess I just have a sick sense of humour or something. Every time I hear the male character in the song start whining about how his ex got somebody else to pick up her records and had to change her phone number I just start giggling at the ridiculousness of a guy who is apparently a scary nutjob trying to act like the injured party. I love those moments in art [and life] when someone is totally oblivious to the incongruity of their external and internal worlds.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9NF2edxy-M

I loved that!

I am mildly disturbed that the original makes you laugh.

He's the one who changed his number, not her.

That said, their cover/medley of Day Tripper still makes me giggle in the best way.

/no, not that tea party. The awesome Canadian one.

The distinction has already been made, in this thread, by some spag named Twid, but good looking out (song in question was Paint it Black).

That said, this IS shameless self promotion. Better is debatable. I leave it up to the listener, since I think the original is a pretty fucking great song anyway. This is just a little heavier/less orchestral.

Uninvited by Alanis Morrisette as done by Anarchangel (Villager on vocals/Twid using her bass):

Either something Alanis is doing is musically over my head, or she can't sing. I strongly suspect the latter. She just sounds like yowling cats and sick cows to me.

When I worked at RadioShack in the 90's, they'd get a different DVD every month and we had to keep it playing over and over. Alanis was agreed to be the worst. I think the next month we got Shania Twain. We were talking about how she wasn't really that good musically but adequate in a "pretty girl who can sing a little" entertainer kind of way and my manager said "Well, she's no Alanis..."

BEST. SARCASM. EVER.

I think Primus does The Residents' Hello Skinny/Constantinople quite well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvmlY_bmuSs
The Residents may/probably do Hello Skinny better (I admit I heard Primus's version before The Residents) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvJiyOPmsJs
but Constantinople...the voice...I just can't do it. Heretic, etc. I'm sure https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcI5rNR5TGM

I will say that I do like Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade's cover of Pink Floyd's Pigs (3 Different ones) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CA-QpUgwlEI as much or better than the original https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Okd3Oyii7E

Can't disagree really. Can't claim his career has been filled with similar high points either. In fact, the "High points" such as they are, are largely covers. Depeche Mode, Soft cell, He'll gladly tweak it enough to sell to the kids and they'll lap it up in droves.

There is little functional difference between Manson and Barney the fucking dinosaur really.

While tourniquet is one of my favs, there's a lot of quality stuff on mechanical animals:

Great Big White World
Mechanical Animals
Disassociative
The Speed of Pain
The Last Day On Earth
Coma White

Easily their best album.

I do love Pink Floyd and have a bit of a chick boner for Primus/Les's side projects. He does add in a good amount of Floyd tidbits at their shows and I believe the Flying Frog Brigade covered all of Animals at the show the song I linked to was from. Definitely a big difference between seeing them at a regular concert vs them playing at a festival. He opens a lot with "In the Flesh?"

I'll stop gushing now

I've seen the show, probably half a dozen times in various incarnations. It's nothing special. I've seen him bottled off stage at a festival for piss poor performance and being stupidly late.

If you want a stage show, go to the fucking theatre. I paid for music and what I got is some middle aged guy dithering around a stage pretending to be sinister for money. There's this whole stink of "trying too hard" that just becomes fucking nauseating after a while. What was the last good Manson album? You say MA, I say that's a good long while ago now and the output since is, well, fucking terrible.

The Last Day On Earth

I do admit I like this song a lot and do listen to some others here and there. Eh, even if some of it's kind of silly, I like music that makes me laugh. Hell, last year(?), some of our friends were going to see them @ the Casino Ballroom in Hampton so we figured why the heck not. What else were we going to be doing on whatever night that was? Honestly, it was pretty meh. Especially since I heard they at least usually put on a good show. There were some enjoyable parts but it was a SHORT show, but such is often the way at the Casino Ballroom. That and there probably isn't much leeway in the way of theatrics, since I feel like one of these days, if someone sneezes the wrong way, that building will either collapse or burst into flames.

You said his high point was mostly covers. I countered that their best album had 0 covers on it. Yes, it's old, but they're just one of many bands still around today that peaked in the 90's. Financially, his high points are covers is more what I meant. Personally, I found Portrait and Antichrist the real high points. The sound got far too clean by Holywood and he's kept right down that path ever since. There seemed to be some point after the whole columbine thing where the focus shifted from music to making even more cash. Not that there's anything wrong with that as such, but the music suffered pretty badly. And ripping off Kiss and Cooper is risky at the best of times.

Heart - Battle of Evermore (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iB83DoAveYw)

Apparently Heart's encore performance has basically been Zeppelin covers for some time now.

Saw them this past summer.  They covered Immigrant Song and Stairway to Heaven for the encore.

100% awesome.
