Title: 23ae
Post by: Cramulus on November 11, 2009, 02:46:17 PM
(http://23ae.com/images/23ae.gif) (http://23ae.com/)

For those of you that don't know what it is, lemme relate the history of the place, as I know it.

23ae is a Discordian blog once run by Prince MuChao. You may remember him if you've read the Apocrypha Discordia.

It is, in my estimation, the most popular "Discordian" blog. It gets tons of hits from random Discordians who are not currently connected to this Discordian Society. When I was a young pinealist, I read every single goddamn thing on 23ae. It houses some good material, and a lot of fluff. It's where I first met Ratatosk, Broken AI, Dr Jon Swabey, The Other Anonymous, and the infamous Rev. Uncle BadTouch.

Prince MuChao never did much to moderate the site, he let everybody post pretty much whatever they wanted. That's how the place has a reputation (around these parts) for being what we would call "pinealist". But to be fair, it's hard to generalize about the users and content of the site. It's dead as a doornail right now, so there's nothing to generalize about.

Prince MuChao became frustrated with the place and backed off. He's a ghost now, only responding to about 1 out of 10 emails. Luckily, some people (myself included) have admin powers over there. I've continued to keep it warm, making sure I have something on the front page at any given time. I think I represent about 50-75% of the posts in the last year or so.

The other posts are either Uncle BadTouch posting info from his monthly snoozeletters, or DrJon posting about Discordian Holydays. It's fairly innocuous.

In the last six months the site has gone pretty much dead. There's about one post per month, and a half dozen comments.

So here's what I propose:

We can very easily transform 23ae into what we want it to be. All it would take is one post every few weeks or so to maintain a presence on the site. I guarentee that this will generate more attention for whatever it is we post about.

So what do we want to turn it into?

That's a damn good question! I'd love to hear what you guys think.

Disclaimer

I know Uncle BadTouch posts there. I know a lot of you don't like the site. I want this discussion to remain focused on how we can make 23ae a useful vector for us. We can't scare Uncle BadTouch off the entire internet, and to be honest I don't think his minimal presence there is really important. Focusing on him, or the alleged "pinealism" over there is a distraction, let's move past it.

What I think

-23ae could be a good vector to post "best-of" output from our forum. There are a lot of ideas here which will be wasted (in some sense) if they never leave the forum. So let's get the word out about horrormirth, activitism, KYFMS, etc etc. The apple talk dialogues, some of the rants in OKM, that sort of stuff could be x-posted with minimal effort. Though -- that was our plan with the pd blog, and look what happened to that! (I think we're up to zero posts in six months)

-it's (potentially) a great way to get participation in other missions. letter writing campaigns, omgasm, and intermittens come to mind.

-is there something bigger?

So I was thinking about this during class for the past hour and 20 minutes, and I think Cram is on to something here. If 23ae is indeed a major "point of entry" into Discordianism for hapless wanderers, then we gain a major advantage by using it to spread our messages. We can use it to link to the wiki, and projects or GASMs whose mission statements and instructions are relatively short can be posted directly to it. For things we might want to publish like the Apple Talk Dialogues, we might set up pages for them like we have for the PD and the BIP (another reason to get on with applying that sexy new front page and background design).

Better yet, taking it over will allow us to form a massive discordian internet cartel.
Next stop shaking down bella's diner for protection money.

What about posts that accentuate the vast differences in interpretations of Discordianism? Maybe with the idea to cut through some of the "You're not pineal enough/you're too pineal" arguments? That might have been something useful for many of us to have read when we first got blindsided by She What Done It All.

I like it.  You mentioned giving people a sense of what Discordians do.  There are a lot of ways people on this site do things differently, so participants can write a little scenario about activities they engage in or beliefs they hold that brings the religion into their everyday lives.

This is How I Discordian

We could also do "Discordian Squares" which would be like Hollywood Squares, except with Discordians.

"I'll take TGRR for the Block."

"Ok, The Good Reverend Roger, welcome to the show! Here's your question, The famous musician Billy Idol once said: ""The biggest misconception people have about me is that I'm..." what?

"Human? Hehehe, no really... ummm, he actually thought people assumed he was gay."

"Gay, hrmmm ok, Contestant, what do you say... Agree or Disagree?"

"I disagr *mind lazors* err I agree!"

"I'm sorry the correct ans  *moar Mind Lazors* Oh YES! X gets the square!"

I kind of like the idea of exalting TGRR as a god. That will reinforce the idea that many n00bs have that he is our Leader™. Then it will be extra-funny when we're all, "WTF dipshit, that was a joke".

Podcasts stopped, and i stopped checking the site.

I'd help in any way I could if you'd want me. I personally never even saw the site before. I did some digging around the internet for a while and talked to a friend and fellow dischordian who got me into this whole thing in the first place. But mainly it was the Principia Dischordia and The Black Iron Prison as well as the BIP wiki-type thing. I unfortunately was dumb and didn't realize you guys fucking wrote the BIP until after I got here.

At any rate, I'd love to help out in any way I can. Just let me know what I can do to help.

okay, so

everybody that's interested in this project:

write up a post!

Doesn't have to be long.

I'd like to suggest the two possible types of posts:

-Documenting the existence of the Discordian Society - there's precious little quotable data about real life Discordians doing antics. If you've had a Discordian adventure, whether it's online or in meatspace, write about it. If you belong to a cabal, tell us about it.

-Spreading "newer" Discordian ideas. Pick a topic which seems to have originated from this disgusting soup known as peedy dotcom and write it up. Could be a little sermon about the KYFMS rule, some horrormirth images, MS Paint creations, takes on the news, rants, parables, diatribes, etc etc etc. It's okay to repost-recycle material from this board - even if you're not the one who originally wrote it.

What do you think - We should aim at putting up one or two articles per week?

Let me know if you need help getting an account at 23ae.

this is a GOLDEN APPLE SEED MISSION, so if you do this, Eris will grant you bonus oral sex in the Afterlife.

I don't understand why you'd have a forum that people can't sign up for, unless it's a private thing, and the whole idea here is to attract newcomers.

I think the idea was that it was supposed to be a blog. Not a forum. So people have to get added to the blog's contributor list, and the way to do that is to ask one of the admins, such as Cram.

I probably won't write anything particularly unique, how about an excerpt from my NaNoWriMo?  It's about a guy living in the present day who gets sick of the bullshit around him and decides to declare himself Emperor of the United States.  Working title is Norton II.

Quote from: Norton IIWith the freshness imbued by beloved rays Curtis rushed through the morning as though eating and bathing were unwanted distractions.  His announcement, crisp of dried mud and rain and numbering a hundred waited in his trunk.  Dressing in the most unassuming business casual attire he could find, complete with a lanyard for his keys and accessorized by a clipboard, he loaded the weathered stack of papers onto his person.  A pen, a staple gun, duct tape, and a thick black felt marker accompanied him.
Curtis was a flurry that day, a storm of sharp staples and shiny tape and his edict.  He sensed telephone poles and bulletin boards as though by radar; colleges were goldmines and Boston, have to love it, is a college city.  The fervor with which he posted ran out when he saw his stack so greatly diminished after so short a time.  Three quarters through the pile, on a student activity board in Boston College, an administrative looking man walked up to him.
"Excuse me, this board is for use by students and student businesses," he said irritably.
"Right, well I'm a student and the papers are my business," Kurt, in exaggerated movements, stapled his sheet on top of something about guitar lessons.  His insolence was not lost; he realized after all the edicts he'd put up that day that the indoor boards were not meant for the heavy staple gun and their removal would necessitate a sizable chunk of the cork coming with it.
"Let me see your student i.d. then," the man said impatiently.
"Sorry, I don't have time, I need to get to class."
"Oh?  Eleven fourteen is a strange time for class to start."
"Actually, it's an eleven thirty class, and a sizable walk away so I need to get to it."
"Ah, right.  Which building is that in?"
             "The, uh, English building."
The man pointed out the window, his gesture landing a distance not two hundred yards from the door behind them.  "That English building?"
"Oh, thank you so much for your help, I was a transfer this spring and I'm still learning my way around.  Putting these ads up must have turned me around worse than I thought.  Well, have a nice day," he strode off toward the door.
The administrator watched him go, the series of lies running through his head.  He turned to see what it was this young man he was positive did not belong here was so eager to post.  He read the proclamation and read it again.

Dear beloved countrymen, honorable citizens all,

On this day, April the fifteenth in the year two thousand and nine, I, Curtis Norton Mayhew declare myself Emperor of these United States.  I shall henceforth be known as Emperor Norton the Second, being the next in that line.

As Emperor of the lands, all sovereignty rests on my crown.  My coronation announcement is to follow in the weeks to come, an affair to which the current heads of state shall be invited.  I am sure to find them respectful quite as much as they are found to be respectable, their acknowledgment of this rightful throne both complete and enthusiastic.

The timeliness of this declaration is owed to the demand of a great many of the citizens of the United States of America, currently overburdened by the numerous crises of our time.  By the authority invested in me as Emperor I intend to address these concerns directly and efficiently, the action being not only my expressed desire but also an obligation to my people.

Cordially and sincerely,
Emperor Norton the Second

His salute to the new throne was to snatch the stained paper from the board and crumple it.  Down the hallway, determinedly inspecting an advertisement for this season's new clothing line, an actual student caught the bizarre interaction.  With her phone at the ready, she caught the frustrated man in a photo at just the proper moment.  Curt noticed the girl noticing the man noticing his flier with a glance over his shoulder as he opened the door.  He stopped and turned in her direction.
"Just saw a friend of mine, figured I would say hello since I have all this free time now," he explained to the man, walking off before a rebuttal could be formed.  He stopped before the girl, telling her, "walk with me."
She did.  "What was that all about?"
"I don't know," he confessed, "some guy with a lot of concern over bulletin boards.  Listen, let me see that picture."
She showed him, the administrator sweeping his hand forward to snatch the offending paper.
"Beautiful.  Listen, print this out and send it to the school newspaper.  They'll love it," he promised, then, noticing her trepidation, "or you could send it to me and I'll do it."
"No, I'll take care of it," she assured, "suggested headline 'Staff Interferes with Student Activities'."
"Oh, I love it.  What's your name, by the way?"
             "Tiffany," she told him.
"Tiffany," he stopped and looked her in the eye earnestly, intensely, "you are now an operative under the command of Norton the Second, Emperor of the United States."
Confusedly but not without humor she replied, dutifully, "The Emperor has my loyalty."
He could have kissed her then, he was so happy with the turn of events.  He made a note to pick up the school paper the following day and it dawned on him.  "One more thing," he handed her one of his proclamations, then exiting the building and leaving the college behind.  An operative must be worth quite a few posters.

It's about a guy living in the present day who gets sick of the bullshit around him and decides to declare himself Emperor of the United States.  Working title is Norton II.

Oh, you didn't...

Didn't what?

I think I'll just call you Rupert Giles II.

Hoops, Enki, Roger, your username and password have been PM'd to you. Enjoy!

Before we fill up the place with the New Face of Chaos, I want to remind people that the intent is to keep the place alive (by some measure), and show other people why Eris really is the faith of choice for this decade.

The site's layout is pretty whack - There's no way to scroll back and see older posts. So if we post 10 entries in one day, the last 5 will be visible on the front page, and the other 5 will probably just sink into the archive with the other noise. So let's try not to move too fast. We'll burn ourselves out anyway.

Those of you that don't want an account, but can think of some stuff which should go on 23ae, please feel free to post it ITT! Or if you just want to hold it here before you post it, that's cool too. X-posting images, thread topics, or other content from PD is totally legit.. (sort of like Manta Obscura's Insightful Post Dump (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=18464.0))

So far I haven't paralleled any events in Norton's life, referred to the original one other than in name, or even give it much of an effect on the narrative at all.  The whole thing would work the same if he declared himself minister of his own religion or the reincarnation of Lewis Carrol.  I liked the idea of it being a tribute to a pretty amazing story, and given that it's a personal project I don't see what the problem is.

Then again, you made up your mind already and I might as well be arguing in favor of torturing puppies.

Well then I'll fail and I'll do so with fervor.  A NaNoWriMo that nobody will read isn't going to detract from anything he did.

The kid isn't running around shouting 23PINEALFNORD and Discordia isn't mentioned whatsoever.  It's really a vehicle for pointing out that not everything needs to be incredibly serious all the time.  Apparently though the memory of Norton is though.  Very, very much so.

He's having fun, not letting a shitty situation in life get to him, and he's got a great sense of humor.  Maybe originality isn't one of his strong points, but give the fella a chance.   :D

Does it matter the situation?  I mean, you seem to have very much decided how you feel about it.  I doubt anything I could answer that with would suffice.

I'm not trying to make it good, I'm keeping it readable for my own sake.  I'm having fun with it and I thought the selection I put up was a fun passage.  If it's not the kind of thing we're looking to put on 23ae then I won't, plain and simple, it was an attempt at a contribution because I don't have much time to come up with another one when I'm doing NaNoWriMo.

If you're worried about the mockery I would reap from 23ae why are you unconcerned with contributing to it here?

Oh, I'm not worried. That was more fair warning. I will almost certainly mock it if you post it there, as well. Not because I don't like you, but because I don't like your protagonist or your storyline, and it really doesn't matter when it's a NaNoWriMo project because no one will ever read it anyway, but if you post it publicly as some sort of "discordian work" I will feel obliged to publicly express my feelings about having the memory of Emperor Norton reduced to a hack storyline. Only two kinds of people declare themselves Emperor; pretentious twats and crazy people. Sorry, man.

I'm amazed by how frequently people only fall into two categories.  They'll either miss the reference or they'll skip the story.  Declaring oneself Emperor is either crazy or pretentious.  Nobody ever could act or react for reasons beyond these.

The storyline could be hack and the writing is probably shitty and maybe it's not a very good "discordian work" (any of which are assumptions based on very little) but the way you guys are acting I sort've expect to be excommunicated as a heretic.

Roger just seems to think your storyline is really unoriginal. I actively dislike it, and your main character, based on the glimpse of him I read in your fragment. Hey, it's OK; I wrote a novel with an unsympathetic protagonist once, too.

Some of my favorite novels have had unsympathetic or ambiguous protagonists.  Usually that's intentional though.  If anyone asks I'm trying to pull an Updike.

Well, Cram was trying to keep this relatively on point so I'm all for splitting the thread where it got off track.

I do not have access to the site layout and couldn't tinker with it if I wanted to.

If someone is interested in redesigning it, we could try writing to Prince Mu Chao - I wager there's a good chance he'd let someone screw with it / install a new one.

But, if you like, I can wait for you to post and then spam six or seven copies of your post over it. I think that might make you happy.

I've been realllly busy over at 23ae. But you can't tell yet, because it's a bunch of posts which are scheduled to be posted over the coming months.

Currently:

MONDAYS are POSTERGASM day. I've got dada sheets and links to great print-and-play content every monday. I've got posts pre-written up through Feb 8th.

THURSDAYS (starting on Dec 24th) are BLACK IRON PRISON day. I'm reposting an essay from the BIP every week until late march.

I thought the sky had fallen - Roger has a post up on 23ae (http://23ae.com/2009/11/why-is-the-good-reverend-roger-angry-today-1/) -- go drop in and comment on it

You could try MP4/AAC encoding, it can go to a lot lower bitrates before the distortion gets really warbly and chunky. MP3 is just the first generation of these audio codecs and doesn't perform very well at low bitrates (below ~90kbps or so).

You can get the tool from here:

http://www.audiocoding.com/nero_aacenc.html

There you can download a ZIP file with, in the /win32/ directory an executable program named neroAacEnc.exe. That's the one you need.

Extract that executable file to the same directory as where your .WAV recording is, then open a commandline window there (Start > Run > "cmd", and then cd into that directory) and then you type this:

neroAacEnc -q 0.3 -if "good reverend wakeup song.wav" -of "wakeup song.mp4"

to convert it. the number after the -q is the quality setting, it's between 0.0 and 1.0, low numbers make smaller files. after -if comes the input file, which is what you just recorded (needs to be a .WAV file, but I think that's not a problem, right?) and after -of comes the output file, which is the name of the compressed, encoded end result.

oh and before anyone starts an audio codec argument, I'm suggesting MP4/AAC because it seems most music player programs, ipods, phones and such have support for this format. I'd use OGG otherwise because it has the awesome drag-Fish-drop conversion tool (http://www.rarewares.org/dancer/dancer.php?f=249) (download the ZIP, run the executable, you get a small square window with a yellow fish in it, you drag and drop your .WAV file on top of this fish, and the fish begins to rotate while it encodes the file for you--this is awesome).

anyway, hope that works for you, Rev.

Some hippie of his left a truly insipid response to my Supposedly Green post.  I barfed.

His followers have left loads of comments on my stuff.

They're nice, but dumb.

Correct.  But, you know, being green just means being "in tune" with nature.

I meant if he was hearing a lot about hippies today, and not seeing how all the unconnected situations were related, that perhaps the factor he is missing is that HE himself is in all the situations, and it may very well be that he is, in fact, a hippie.

Hey guys!

One thing that would really help out 23ae right now is if people *cough cough* read it and commented on it.

we're getting some random hate from random posters, and it's a shame that in some cases, those are the only comments for those entries.

It'd be totally fucking awesome if people could do two things:

-make comments to drown out the trolls
-help find more readers for 23ae

I'm trying not to feed the trolls

you don't need an account to post snarky comments.

anyway, I was really tempted by banning some people, but Payne set me straight. If I start banning people who post hate, I'll have to ban everybody that isn't a hippie.

there may be a time when order must be imposed, but for now, let's just try to drown out the trolls with better comments.

On the other hand, Cram, it's no fun posting when the comments are ALL hate from 2-3 user names that post nothing BUT hate.

2-3 troll accounts plus Uncle BadTouch and his crew (I don't suggest banning them, of course, hate them though I might) aren't exactly incentives for new people to join, or for ranting.

I totally hear you! We've got 20+ authors and only 7 of them have more than 1 post. The comments are probably a contributing factor.

Cain tried pushing back a little bit - we shall see how said parties respond. Like I said, I'm not above bringing out the banstick. Some Discordians only want to troll other Discordians. I guess that's legal, but it's a waste of everybody's energy. That energy is hard enough to harness and focus without it getting "friendly fire'.

and now that I think about it, I can think of two people who have been banned from 23ae in the past. One for comment spam, the other for imagebombing.

Yeah, I'll be interested to see how he responds to my comments.  I think he in particular only gets away with it because 23ae is filled with hippie types, who don't push back as hard as they should.

Anyway, his response will give us an idea of how to go foward, so all is good.

Or they don't care....

I used to have several articles on 23AE and I almost never interacted with the comments... I wrote the stuff for the sake of writing it and Rev Bootie, even back then was a snarky ass... but since I didn't follow the comments, I didn't know or care.

And over the years I had a lot of people contact me regarding something I wrote there... I don't think the people that comment are the only people reading the stuff.

(warning: the following post contains repost)

23ae now has content scheduled through... shit ... JUNE 2010.

That's 1-2 posts per week. I'll be posting a lot of complete books (The Summa Discordia, the Metaclysmia Discordia, the Wise Book of Baloney, etc etc etc), as well as every issue of Intermittens. We've also got a few pages from the Black Iron Prison.

There's also a contest to submit downloadable art for 23ae... such as banners, sigs, and wallpapers. If you've got some art skills, even bad MS Paint art skills, direct them at http://23ae.com/downloads/

Do you have content you want to showcase on 23ae? post it here, or request an author account. Pretty much everything cool we've ever published here will one day be featured on 23ae. So help us collect all of it!

Most of all, we need more readers! Help spread the 23 Apples by linking to it from your signature, facebook, or other convoluted internet social media.
