I love that band! You should see them in concert.
Also, Richard Cheeses' rendition of Rape Me
I downloaded his new album tonight. Not as good as the first one but still not bad. I've been finding a lot of interesting bands on Jamendo (http://www.jamendo.com) lately. I'll try to play a few of them on my Radio Free Discordia show.Brad Sucks - Look and Feel Years YoungerYou got interesting taste.

I have a collection of songs stuck in my head. Most of them are Freezepop and Lady Gaga.

But the fun part of musical snobbery is while LMNO and I may both mock you for your musical tastes, you can be sure that we'll have a go at each other for the same thing. I mean, who in their right mind would like Justin Timberlake? Now, if you'll excuse me I'm going to go put on some White Lion.
Naw, I'll stick with Slipknot. Amon Amarth is okay, but not really to my taste. Slayer is always a blast though.Slipknot had exactly one halfway decent song. "Pulse of the Maggots" wasn't it.

Name of album or track please?
In my opinion, Filteria (especially Domestic Modulator) and Pleiadians (the entire I.F.O. album) are the best psytrance ever, but I am willing to consider new stuff for the top 10 :-P
Oh and I recently got a new album, "born underwater" by Merr0w, is really very good.
There seems to have been an increase in production of new melodic goa/psy in the past few years. I approve of this.
thanks I will check it out!
I don't know any of the other artists you mentioned :) funny because I have quite a lot of psy in my collection :) except suomisaundi, that's the same style that Haltya does, right? Usually I am a great fan of batshit crazy shit, but for some reason Haltya and other stuff like it never really got past "enjoyable" for me, perhaps it's just not my taste. The only "batshit crazy" psy track that I really enjoy (that comes to mind) is "Gamma Goblins" by Hallucinogen (please tell me you know Hallucinogen right).
And be sure to check it Pleiadians - I.F.O. if you don't already know it. According to a review on discogs "This album has attained almost mythical proportions. A timeless classic that is also a great album, the best Etnica/Pleiadians/Crop Circles album, the most psychedelic full-on album from the golden Goa era etc. So, is the album really this good? Yes. In fact this is probably the best example of a hyped album that lives up to the hype." :)

Infected Mushroom > Psykovsky? Generic? You are so lol!
Perhaps it just takes a while of being into psytrance and the like to really get into stuff like Psykovsky but I've never found anything else so complex and goosebumpish.

I am listening to the drone of our plant engineer talking to me. He is operating under the assumption that I am listening to, or somehow care about, what he is saying. As I type, I am giving him looks that he assumes indicates interest in his jabbering, but is actually speculation about whether or not I could convince some Norwegians to harpoon his fat ass. I bet I could, they'll hunt anything.
I am listening to a room full of jackasses all trying to sound smart in front of the boss. Incidentally, the boss is reading this over my shoulder (everyone else is on the other side of the room), and he is making a valiant effort at not laughing at my mockery of the fools who think he actually likes having his time wasted in such a manner. Roger's new theme song:
DESAPARECIDOS - "The Happiest Place On Earth"
I want to pledge allegiance to the country where I live
I don't want to be ashamed to be American
But opportunity no, it don't exist
It's the opiate of the populace
We need some harder shit now
The truth is getting around
And each public school is a halfway house
Where the huddled masses sober up and up enough
There's not enough to fatten the cows
And feed all of us
It's just a rationing of luck
What can't be bought gets raffled off
Oh God good God shed greed on thee
Your shining sea turned a dirty green
From the industry off the shores of New Jersey
I got a letter from the army
So I think that I'll enlist
I'm not brave or proud of nothing
I just want to kill something
Too bad that now-a-days you just point and click
Swing low satellite
Hot white chariot
In the computer's blue glare
The bombs burst in the air
There was a city once now nothing is there
Our freedom comes at their expense
It makes sense, does it? Dollars and cents
They're stretching barbed wire across the picket fence
That is surrounding your housing development
Just in case you lack the confidence
Oh God my God give strength to thee
These amber waves purple majesty
Are nothing but backdrops for Disney
We'll look up close
It is superimposed on a blank blue screen
It is fantasy fucking magical
The dreams floats like a chemical
Through each snapped synapse our television past
That is beautiful no more no more

Suspended in Tribulation by Suffocation who is probably the best American Death Metal band, or maybe in a two-way tie with Obituary.
Suffocation is great. Old obituary (with James Murphy) was awesome but they haven't put out anything good since "The End Complete".
Nile and Morbid Angel are pretty good, for American bands.
Black Dahlia Murder is unquestionably one of the worst bands I've ever heard, IMO.
I'm listening to "Cut the Mullet" by Wesley Willis.
I'd give that title to Five Finger Death Punch, and a bunch of other metalcore bands. But, I'm biased because I really, really don't like metalcore.
The two bands that got me into metal are Carcass and Hypocrisy, neither is American.
Black Dahlia Murder might be overhyped, but worst metal band you've ever heard? Thats harsh.
Really harsh.

So, I'm becoming my parents. Well, at least I could do worse, taste wise.
how on earth could you do worse, taste-wise, than Kenny G?

though I am definitely prone to disliking bands based more on their fanbase than their sound, BDM is one case where the music just makes me want to stick rusty butter knives into my ears until they stop working.
Perhaps i should revisit BDM. I don't think I've listened to anything they've put out more recently than, say, 2005.

Lady of the Valley by White Lion:x Why would you do that to yourself???
Hey, say what you will about White Lion, but that's a good song. Yeah, the lyrics are kinda cheezy, but I'm not there for the lyrics. I'm there for the guitartistry of one Vito Bratta. Also, White Lion were one of the few hair metal bands to blend in any kind of politics into their songs. There was more substance underneath the glam compared to a lot of the other fluff metal bands.
So, if I recall there are a few Boston area Muse fans around?
Well for a heads up, they're playing a show in Boston in March, tickets are up for pre-sale for fan club members tomorrow and open to wider sale on Saturday. I wouldn't announce it but for their North American appearances being so rare and there being only six of them this time around.
EoC,
will be braving the Twilight fans to go.
also, RWHN, listening to White Loin for Vito Bratta's guitar work makes me wonder if you also listen to Winger for Reb Beach's guitar work.
I remember someone here posting a link to that. Maybe it was you!
I'm listening to an MP3 that randomly appeared in my iTunes on my work computer. I do not remember downloading this MP3 or ripping it or anything.
It's a cover of "The Final Countdown."
The instrumentals are all KAZOOS and the vocals have been replaced by yelling dudes.
It's actually kinda awesome.
BUT WHERE THE FUCK DID IT COME FROM?
KAZOOS!
my condolences.
one of the best things I ever saw at a concert was when The Mars Volta stopped playing during the 3rd song of their set in a vain attempt to explain that their music was SERIOUSLY SERIOUS and ONLY WIFE-BEATING NASCAR FANS WOULD BE MOSHING TO THEIR SUPER SERIOUS MUSIC SO STOP RIGHT NOW!
about 2 minutes later, a plastic water bottle came flying through the air and hit Cedric Bixler-Zavala in the face, splashing the contents of the water bottle all over him. He stopped playing and uttered a line which will be forever immortal to me:
"What the.....OH FUCK, IT'S PISS!"
They stopped their set and flounced amidst mutterings of "we'll never play here again!"
the kid who was deemed responsible for the piss bottle received a standing ovation from 67,000 people as he was being carried out by security.
And RHCP, who was headlining the festival, came out 45 minutes early rather than leave the fans waiting in between sets, and played their full set plus the extra 45 minutes to make up for Mars Volta's utter lack of ballsack.
all in all, it was glorious.

Which goes to show, only Fugazi can pull the Fugazi trick.
They're still incredibly douchey when they do it, however.
Heh. He may be a douche, but he's done all right for himself as far as the whole "keeping your integrity and actually spending your life making money doing what you love" thing goes.
Sure, he's not perfect, but he's done a lot better than most people.

Roddy Bottum told this story in an interview about a time they (Faith No More) were playing somewhere in South America. It might've been Columbia, who knows. Anyway, apparently when they were playing "Epic" some people started throwing water bottles on stage. Mike Patton being Mike Patton, encouraged it shouting "more bottles" in Spanish. One apparently was filled with urine. Mike Patton being Mike Patton, opened the bottle and emptied the contents on top of his head. But, then again, that's pretty much Patton's schtick. Mock the audience non-stop.
Holy fuck, this song makes me so damn happy.

I don't get why you can't accept that this is the sort of thing I like. I'm not doing it to please an arbitrary group of people who I can't even stand being around, I'm doing it because I think it's cool. The same goes for the music. I like this shit. I don't -care- if you get it or not. It's my tastes. Fuck you if you have a problem.

how is this is a cobbling-together of musical styles btw, it sounds to me like your standard hiphop/rnb with a touch of electroclash, or whatever it's called [i never bothered to recall the names sorry], this has been playing in clubs I did not want to go to for years? or is it relatively new in the USA perhaps?
It's just a hip-hop subgenre called crunk as done by skinny white kids. Serious, no mixing involved, the guy's just stupid.
Also, yes, it's relatively new here. Have some links to the original european variety?
RAH RAH AH AH AHHHHH
I think it has something to do with her not actually wanting to enunciate "want your bad romance" in the hook, making it sound like "WAH-YA-BA-RAH-MANS".

now, I like alot of electronic music, but the "Best of Arman Van Helden" album got stupid as soon as someone decided to make an album with the "best" of Armand Van Helden on it.
I'm listening to a song called "Luna" by a Portugese metal band called Moonspell who I have known of for a long time and never listened to because their name made me think they would be crappy wiccan metal like Evanescence or Nightwish. It turns out they're fucking dope.

David Tibet can be great when he's on it. sometimes he's like a broken record though. I kind of wish he'd never appeared on any of the Death In June records, except for maybe 1888. He sort of dulls the Douglas high.

As well as, while I recognized a large part of the songs, they hardly touched "every" pop song of the last couple of decades. So would that mean there are other sets of chords that are similarly (if less) popular? Or is the rest a reasonably original chaotic selection of palatable chord progressions?
And that orange/blue contrast article is very interesting :D Dunno if you caught it, but a little while back I re-modified part of the SubGenius "people people" rant into a super cheesy corporate-looking website [I was bored and it amused me]. I might have copied the colours from somewhere, but it's no coincidence: http://000.blackironprison.com :)

Isn't all the music from Bioshock on the Great American Songbook? Because it's good, but you might as well just avoid the crappy game altogether.

From the first, maybe. The first did have an atmospheric track which is similar to this, IIRC, but yes, a lot of the music was vintage stuff.
And also, monumental disagree, I loved Bioshock.

One of my two or three favorite bands of all time. Troublegum was the soundtrack to my teenage years. Funnily enough, I met Andy Cairns once. They were in Seattle recording with Jack Endino and he was taking in the same Clutch/Corrosion of Conformity show that I was. I ended up behind him in line to use the men's room. Conversation went something like this:
Me: "Holy shit, you're Andy Cairns, aren't you?"
Him: "Holy shit, somebody in America knows who I am!"
Me: "Not to suck your dick or anything, but you guys have been one of my favorite bands for a long time."
Him: "Well, that makes you a member of a pretty exclusive club now, dun'nit?"

I have about 3 more minutes left and I am genuinely impressed and more than a little surprised, may have to download some of his songs. Will listen to the youtube link after it's finished.

set 250 I believe has a remix of Thom York's - Harrow Down Hill.. already a haunting song, the remix is phenomenal.

I've got youtube on- it's a good song, I'll add it to favourites and download at some point.
I'll have a listen to 250 now.
I AM SURROUNDED BY HEATHENS! :madbanana:

HEATHENS!
Techno isn't music. Megadeath is crap.
[EDIT] not all electronic music is remixed. Someone has to produce the original song for someone to remix it.
[EDIT] not all electronic music is remixed. Someone has to produce the original song for someone to remix it.
Yeah, and anything remixed is derivative crap.
I'm going to have to invoke the Squiddy Rule on the rest of your post.

Im too n00b to know what the Squiddy rule is.
Also, if it isn't "analog", it's not an instrument. That is all.

ok, so I have a synthesizer, 66 keys, that you can program every aspect of a sound on. Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release, frequency, pitch.
While making those sounds makes you a bit more of a programmer of sound, does being able to play that electronic keyboard make anyone less of a musician because the instrument is electronic?

What kind of synth? I would love to learn but don't really know where to start (I play piano so know the gist of music- but synth is a whole different ball game)

At least there's not a chance of grabbing the wrong end of the stick with an answer like that.

Well, there's no point fucking about.
Programming != being a musician. Programmed "music" is an abomination in the eyes of Johnny Cash, and come the revolution, the temple will be cleansed with fire.

I somewhat agree with that last one, but felt like pokin some fun.
So umm, you don't like ANY music that is enhanced electronically? Just sound waves produced from plucking strings on eukalaly's and hurdy gurdy's, wind through wooden tubes, or brass horns?
Well, there's no point fucking about.

At first I was confused, but rereading the bolded made me realize he isn't talking about using a keyboard as a piano, but more as a noise maker. Is that what you got out of it, too, or am I full of crap?

you're a traditionalist Howl, I respect that, and even agree to a point.
and since appreciation of music is subjective, you're opinion is just as valid as anyone else's
I'll call foul though if you don't think that someone that can play an electronic keyboard as well as a traditional piano is less of a musician because of the instrument.
you're completely correct on drum machine programmers, even though you have to have an understanding of music and time to properly write a beat for the machine to reproduce.
but under your rule, electric guitarists would have to fall under this as well since the instrument is electronic.
Also, if it isn't "analog", it's not an instrument. That is all.

I disagree with you on the electric guitar bit. It is a different instrument, and you actually CAN play it without an amp, it's just hard to hear. They and electric keyboards that can be programmed are nowhere near the same class.

It's electrical. That's different. Unless you're claiming that a light switch = an iPod.
Also, your first point is invalid because even though the horrible din and random noises shat out and called "techno" (or whatever) may be pleasing to your damaged pleasure center, it still isn't music.
It sure as hell ain't rock n roll, anyway. You could take every minute of synthetic screech and combine it, and it would never even approach 10 seconds of Bob Seger's worst song.

Musician in the 70s and 80s. You Euros lack the glands to properly appreciate him.
Fact: Nothing bad can happen to you if he's on the radio (CDs/mp3s do not afford the same divine protection).
Youtube Bob Seger "Still the same" and "The Fire Down Below" for examples.

I know now why I've never heard of him... That's just not very cool music (I have a feeling though my mum might have some on her ipod, after Wham!, Abba and Dolly Parton)
everything in bold is an opinion, even if it is shared by a large group of people.
you sound like I imagine the parents of the kids of the 50's sounded like decrying Rock & Roll.
I'm pretty sure you've said you can't get YouTube at work, but when you can, check this out and tell me if you think it doesn't qualify as music. The vocals, guitars and drums were played and recorded by him (real guitar and drums) then sequenced and additional sounds were added to give it a depth.
I promise it wont rape your ears, it's actually a very low tempo song, but still falls under the electronic music catagory.

When it comes to music, the rock and roll DEFINES cool. Not that it is really appreciated anymore. It seems like that ended sometime around 1996.

I agree generally but those two songs I listened to were just... They... They were a "just no" kind of moment. I lean more toward The Clash if we're talking 'old' music.

You do realize there's about fifty years of recorded popular music that came before 1970, right?

Yes but where do you start looking for that? The nearest I've even gotten to the original music is a lovely lady called Lola Lamour who my grandad and I saw a while back at a War Rememberance Day

Other than that... I haven't really listened to old music, besides classical music and the Wham!/Abba/Cheese my mum insists on listening to
You don't really like music, do you?
You don't really like music, do you?
Why like music, when you can have the same synthetic crap "remixed"?
Remixing synth = Dubstep, by the way, no matter how thin you slice it.
32+ minutes of Dubstep?
I guess she doesn't HAVE to go to hell. :lulz:

So... first you lump 1400 years of pre-recorded music into one term ("classical"), then you jump straight to 1940s big band, then take another leap into the 70's?
You don't really like music, do you?
And that's just hit, rock has swagger. Computers don't have swagger.

Well, take your time and explain it to me.

(Not a damn word, Roger. lol)
And to reply to your comment on Megadeth....yeah, I know...utter crap...but I like that song anyhow. So nyah!

dubstep is a sub genera of electronic music that generally has a much lower BPM and uses a lot more samples than a lot of other forms of electronic music.
kind of like how classic rock is a sub genera of rock.

Elton John, pre-1973. Burn Down the Mission. Rotten Peaches. Holiday Inn. Madman Across the Water.
If you listen to those and don't have a reaction, you're already dead.

Post 1973 I would add "I Don't Want To Go On With You Like That" A great piano riff in that one.
You don't really like music, do you?
Why like music, when you can have the same synthetic crap "remixed"?
Remixing synth = Dubstep, by the way, no matter how thin you slice it.
this is so wrong, I'm not even sure where to start.
Well, take your time and explain it to me.
dubstep is a sub genera of electronic music that generally has a much lower BPM and uses a lot more samples than a lot of other forms of electronic music.
kind of like how classic rock is a sub genera of rock.
So, what do you call remixed artificial music that ISN'T Dubstep?
Roy Orbison made early rock that made you feel like you'd just broken up with Beyonce Knowles.
Roy Orbison made early rock that made you feel like you'd just broken up with Beyonce Knowles.
That is the weirdest description I've heard, and yet... it's perfect.
Elton John-All The Young Girls Love Alice
(Not a damn word, Roger. lol)
And to reply to your comment on Megadeth....yeah, I know...utter crap...but I like that song anyhow. So nyah!
:lulz:
And that brings up some other tunes.

Oh... too late- I like Burn Down the Mission, my bias toward piano comes out at times like this, will listen to the others after
The problem I have with synth is exactly what RWHN brought up. There's no emotion to it. There's no soul.
Every other genre of music has SOMETHING to it...
Hank Williams Sr made country music that made you feel like you were fixing to die.
Roy Orbison made early rock that made you feel like you'd just broken up with Beyonce Knowles.
Bob Seger made rock that makes you feel filthy.
Elton John made rock and/or blues that made you WANT to be filthy.
Early Metallica made rock that made you want to burn down the neighboring village.
Aerosmith could make you feel 3 different ways in one song.
More recently, P!nk and Lady Gaga make music that makes you want to die filthy.
And yeah, P!nk and Lady Gaga use the hell out of synthesizers. But that's not all they're about.
Oh... too late- I like Burn Down the Mission, my bias toward piano comes out at times like this, will listen to the others after

All of his stuff uses loads of piano. It was his instrument. He's arguably one of the top 3 pianists of the 20th century.
because it's a piano sound from an electronic instrument, this would not classify as a musician to you Howl.
I have to respectfully disagree.

You are correct in your assessment of my opinion. Electronic music is too perfect. It lacks the imperfections and mistakes that make music a human endeavor.
In short, electronic music is perfect for America in the 21st century.

but you still need a person to make the music. yes, the technology allows for complete error control if it's not done live (a live electronic music set is a pretty amazing sight BTW, especially india or GOA trance music) but the human element now entirely in the composition.
so you might think of them more as composers than true musicians, unless they're recording themselves playing instruments and placing it in their work.
we'll just have to agree to disagree on whether it's music.

One of the most amasing sets I've been too was an electronic set by Unicorn Kid ("8-bit")- I can't stand to sit at home and listen but in that atmosphere it was brilliant.
My other problem with it was demonstrated by Hanni. You don't listen to electronic music with your ears, you listen to it with your intestines.
How anyone could listen to either Bob Seger song I posted and not feel all horrible and filthy is beyond me...Unless, of course, they aren't listening to the lyrics, just the music itself. And if the music isn't pounding bass at the right BPM, she couldn't listen to it anyway, because her internal organs aren't being assaulted, just her ears.
Maybe I really am an old fart, because I like a little subtlety in my music, not just being bashed with low frequency noise.
jesus christ. he really uses 8 bit digital waveforms.
I hate to say this Hanni, but that shit's too electronic even for ME.
sounds like Optimus Prime ass fucking Soundwave in the middle of a tornado, while giving him a reach around.
I get your thing about the atmosphere though. The scene here in Florida was ruined by the fucking drug kids. I loved going to shows and seeing a live set, but dumbasses were dying of dehydration from MDMA and dancing without water.
the closest place to get electronic music for me now is Orlando or Miami, which sux because I hate them both.

Some songs I like because of the lyrics- some I like because it's just full of energy... Whistle for the Choir by the Fratellis has nice lyrics (in fact most of their lyrics are pretty awesome)... the Dire Straights have good lyrics.
But sometimes you just want something to kill the ear drums.

Yep. But you weren't able to listen to the Seger tunes at all, because if you had been able to listen to them, you'd have commented on the horror that the lyrics inspire.
But I can tell I'm sort of shouting into the void now, same as I would be trying to explain a cell phone to Ben Franklin. Some things just don't translate well, and rock n roll seems to have had the biscuit, these days, to be replaced by error-free computer generated "music".
I really feel bad for you guys.
I'll always be open to suggestions- And I promise to listen to them properly several times and then chant the lyrics back if that would make you happy and convinced I was at least trying to understand 'real' music.

No need to be patronizing, Hanni. If you enjoy electronic music1, then that's what you should listen to, I suppose.
1 In an uncharacteristic fit of generosity, I was able to leave the quote marks out.

god yes. While I love the technology able to adjust a frequency without degrading the quality of the signal (LOL right?) I hate how it's being used in modern music.

Autotune has potential, its just awful when its used for its intended purpose.
I'd love to get the chance to play with it, I wonder if its possible to autotune the sound of machinery to whalesongs... for example.

I'm willing to bet he is not on the side of Kraftwerk.
they and a one or two others were my introduction to electronic. fucking love em.
Dok, you don't like ELO I'm guessing?

at the moment i've been listening to Battles and 65Daysofstatic. I like instrumental stuff, requires composers to find more inventive ways of communicating with the spectators.
Me.I like. :) Fleeting Whispers is pretty nifty.

You're all overlooking the real villain of contemporary music - autotune.
That was mentioned, but I think all of our brains rejected it.
Anyone using autotune (with the SOLE exception of the Freeman Dyson/Bill Nye/Richard Feynmann vid) should be thrown into a mulcher.
Pandora sneaked (the fuck....I must be retarded and not know the correct conjugation)..this guy named Buddy Guy into my classic rock station.

It's blue, mostly. I'm wearing jeans.

incidentally, does it match the color of the lint in your belly button?

BT ... that's a long time ago, only thing I ever heard from him was the "Love Peace and Grease" EP, which is awesome.
Should check out more by the guy (?), apparently.

Actually, Burzum is the dude in Norway who murdered this other guy Euronymous in another Black metal band and then proceeded to burn down some churches.
For more attentive listening I would highly recommend Moonsorrow. Good mix of black metal, folk/viking metal, with a dash of progressive metal. They're dropping a new album in Feb 11.
I'm amused that you don't like harsh, shouted vocals.
Plus, Moonsorrow is really good. Thnx Rev.
They use the juice harp quite a bit actually. It was a little weird at first. They do a pretty good cover of For Whom the Bell Tolls. And it's about the only song they sing in English. I think one of their best tunes is Pimea off the Verisakeet album.
Also, a little trivia, the guy that writes most of their music, Henri Sorvali, also is the main composer and keyboardist for Finntroll.
I hate to break this to you, but it's not "juice harp", no matter what you might find on wikipedia.
It really is "Jew's Harp". Deal with it.
Maybe it's a PC movement but I've also heard it referred to by the more mundane and uncreative names, mouth harp and jaw harp. Or as I like to call it, "That twangy thing."
