Laughter is Salvation
Pungenday, Discord 25, Year of Our Lady of Discord 3174

You've all heard the arguments before: things are bad, but not that bad, but somehow bad enough; humanity is a bunch of hopeless monkeys; I feel like I'm going crazy cause I'm the only one who gets it; etc; etc. Indeed if one were to listen to such arguments, one would have a very bleak and almost misanthropic world view.

But it doesn't have to be like this.

So what if not everybody gets it, so what if they march like cattle to their own deaths? To keep dwelling on  this is to fall into "their" trap. They WANT you to lose hope, they NEED you to lose hope, so they keep you pumped with elitism and hate. Now, I'm not saying the fine people of this place are like that all the time, but to be honest, you have to admit sometimes you get pretty negative.

But why? Here we are, discussing a way of thought that has not only given us hope, but the keys to our own reality. And still we languish. Brothers and sisters, I come before you today to tell you the greatest weapon, the biggest mindfuck, the shiniest apple of discord has been within you this whole time. And do you know what it is?

Laughter.

Thats right. Not only does laughter bring joy to yourself or others you wish, but we can turn it against our foes as well. We've all known that feeling of doing something totally normal to us, and then hearing unexpected laughter from behind. Are they laughing at me? Are they making fun of me? Laughter can make the target question what he is doing or what he believes in far better then any revelation from god. Imagine if you will, if six Discordians stood outside the United States Congress, and as our "esteemed" representatives filed in, they simply pointed and laughed. Oh, the chaos!

By laughing at the horrible, we take all power from it, and refuse to allow it to damage us. Next time your boss asks you to work overtime, simply look him in the face and break out in uncontrollable laughter. Watch him walk away. The shocking, the grotesque, everything loses it's power in the face of laughter. By laughing at ourselves we learn humility, and just how funny the universe nearly is. I'll never forget this one girl I had a huge crush on. After I finally worked up the courage to ask her out, she made it very clear she was not the slightest bit interested. And I laughed. Why?

Next time you encounter a problem, or face difficult times, remove yourself from the situation, and imagine if you had seen the same thing happen, but with cartoon characters. You'd be amazed at how funny losing a wallet and not realizing it till your at a toll booth can be!

Laughter, laughter is the key my brothers and sisters. I dream of the day when we might be able to launch a countrywide Laugh Attack! Just imagine it: Discordians laughing at Nazi rallies, the stock exchange, satanist functions, riots, and every time a politician got on the news, there would be one of our ranks in the audience....laughing his fucking head off!

Seek ye the Hyena, friends! To him speaking and laughter are but the same!

I prefer laughter when you don't quite know if it's screaming.

It's more real that way.

There is much to hate, be elitist and be negative about, but that doesn't stop me getting my yuks.

And I LIKE it that way.

If everybody
Laughed the same
There'd be no Fun
Shame or Pain

More real, more real. To who? To you?
Nothing is real, all is permitted my friend.
But thats the beauty of it! I'm no more right then you!
Ha ha ha ha ha!

I see.

We laugh all the time on this board. Regardless if it's inspired by hate or elitism.

So where's the problem?

I don't think we laugh enough. For interest, your first post. Why so defensive? I didn't attack you, I said nothing against you, and yet you quickly spat venom at me. Now you question why I bothered to open my mouth at all.

Hate. Defensiveness. Elitism.

Why?

Not only that, I'm also saying we can use laughter in many ways, a few that I have not seen used by the odl guard around here.

Well, I don't think it was defensive at all, my first post. I just said what my stance was.

And your second post questioned why you bothered to open your mouth at all, not mine. In fact, you said I was as right as you.

Now who's getting defensive?

I am, however, very interested in hearing about your form of humor.
Laughing while screaming has a nice Lovecraftian flair to it.

Read through the Lollercaust thread in the Think for Yourself Schmuck forum.

It's filled with it. And most of us "Old Guard" (I still think of myself as rather n0obish) are full of it too.

After reading through it I'd have to say I agree with it, but I just don't feel the same.

QuoteOn the surface, the Lollercaust should look funny happy joyjoyjoyjoyjoy go lucky, but looking deeper, you will notice you can't quite tell the maniacal laughter anymore from the hysterical screams and the crazy cries of confusion

Hysterical screams and cries of confusion are still funny happy to me!

In a general sense, I agree that Laughter is an important thing to have during our March to Death.  However, I also think you've got a little too much naivete going here.  What the hell, really, does 6 Discordians laughing at some Congressmen do?  I mean, sure, the 6 Discordians might get some giggles out of it, but what does it accomplish?  The Congressmen won't remember them from a hole in the wall.  And laughing at your boss when he suggests overtime?  Again, it may feel good inside, but you're still going to have to do the overtime, or find a new job.  So do you really win in this exchange?

I think Laughter is important, for maintaining the innerself.  And it's good to make others laugh.  But Laughter itself is not going to solve the problems we are facing today.  So while we take our humor seriously, we still need to take the seriousness seriously, because you can't laugh when you've been atomized by an H-bomb.

You think we don't laugh enough?

When this  ----->  :lulz:  Is our most often used emote?

When Satire and sarcasm are our bread and butter?

When "Do it for the LAIL" is on of our mottos?

Perhaps our brand of humor is a little dark and gallows-y for your tastes; fine.

But don't try to say that we don't laugh enough.  We're laughing all the way to the apocalypse, friend.

And if you can't accept that, then you must just be on some kind of judgemental trip, right?  So stop being so fucking insensitive toward my insensitivity.

Well, Shaman, let me be the first to thank you, for being the very first person to ever come here to teach us all how to be REALLY REAL Discordians!

That's never happened.  Not once in 6 years of hairy-ass, eye-gouging years of fucking with shit, never ONCE has anyone whose balls haven't dropped yet come along to teach us The One True Way to be Discordian.

Thanks, Sensei.

I did this rant way better.  I also think Roger may have done a similar one, but I'm not sure, it may have been LMNO, about humour and politics.

Anyway, I say mine was better not just because I have a huge ego (although I do) but because I didn't try to claim an unspecified "old guard" (who presumably includes me) weren't doing things the way I didn't like (how would I know, after all) and concentrated on a particular style of comedy useful in political arguments and discourses, for cutting people down to size.

I also remembered something you apparently forgot Shaman - that good comedy requires an audience to work well.  OK, so you and some other people laugh at some politicians.  So?  Doesn't make a blind bit of differnece.  You don't even make up 0.1% of the eligible vote.  You don't matter.  But if you can make their supporters laugh at them, if you can turn the politicians into figures of ridicule in the eyes of large amounts of the population, make people feel sheepish and somewhat ashamed of looking up to or defending them....well, then you may be onto something.

I think he believes that making a politician think that some dirty hippies are laughing at him will make the politician reform his wicked ways.

We all remember what happened when that got tried on Nixon, right?

You all prove my point. I get attacked, I get jumped, and why? All of you seem to have such a very odd paradigm, you believe you and your small clique are the end all and be all of Discordianism. You sit at your computers and insulate yourselves with each other.

The pettyness of it all makes me sick! Who in the fuck are you, are any of you to say anything? HA HA! Your all in the same tiny little boat my friends, don't you see? All staring at the cave wall, making conjectures about what we believe we are watching.

However, you sit by and demonize any one who speaks too loudly or speaks differently about the shadows, claiming YOUR right and anyone else is wrong.

Is this what it's become? You speak of bringing Discordianism into the new age, making it modern. Modern indeed, so modern all the evils and worthless shit comes along with it free of charge. Ha ha ha ha ha! I mean, come on, your bitching on the internet! And after I post this, I know your just going to keep bitching and screaming and yelling and whatever you can to make yourself feel that you've won.

So go ahead my esteemed lords of Discordia, please wise and all seeing ones, oh righteous knights of Eris continue your campaign! Feed mine chuckles that I might reach enlightenment!

SY, you thought THAT was being "jumped on".  Let me break it down for you here.  Have you ever watched C-SPAN?  Have you watched the proceedings in the House of Reps and the Senate on C-SPAN?  Have you watched the proceedings in the British Pariliament?  In the U.S. Congress, when they disagree they are all very polite and stately about their disagreements.  In the British Pariliament, they boo and hiss and are rather edgy, comparatively, with their disagreement.  Think of PD.COM in the latter terms.  See, you are making the assumption that we only "jump on" noobs.  Dude, we "jump on" each other just as much, if not harsher and more often.

Wanting to laugh is cool and it is quite commendable and should be encouraged.  We all like to laugh.  Some of us just happen to disagree with your approach.  I'm quite sure there are others who probably agreed with what you had to say.  So, man up and keep at it.

Yak.

Dude.

First of all, if you want to write a rant and have it be well-received, you might try NOT insulting your audience right off the bat by telling them they're doing it wrong. That's something you include in a rant if you're trying to make people defensive and angry.

Second, each of us has a different sense of humor. Trying to tell people that they should alter their sense of humor is like trying to tell people what they should enjoy during sex. It's gauche. JUST DON'T GO THERE.

Are there styles of humor you haven't seen here? No doubt. It doesn't mean that none of us enjoys those forms of humor, and even if it does, so? You have a particular kind of humor? Enjoy it. Share it. Maybe it will make some of us laugh, maybe it won't. I think cones and lard are fucking hilarious. Did I come on here and insist that everyone here is ineffective because they don't share my infatuation with cones and lard? No. I did, however, continue enjoying cones and lard at my own pace, and the initial bafflement and revulsion I received has gradually turned to acceptance and even, sometimes, appreciation.

There are things here that some people are into that I don't GET. I just don't. Vocoders. Robot sex. Pestilence. Boils. But I appreciate that THEY get it, and I enjoy their enjoyment.

So whatever you're into, man, do it. Get it. Be it. Laughter is contagious; eventually, maybe some of us will laugh with you, or at least dig that you're grooving on it. But don't tell us that because we don't like it the way you like it, we're doing it wrong.

Thanks.

Second, each of us has a different sense of humor. Trying to tell people that they should alter their sense of humor is like trying to tell people what they should enjoy during sex. It's gauche. JUST DON'T GO THERE.

You all prove my point. I get attacked, I get jumped, and why? All of you seem to have such a very odd paradigm, you believe you and your small clique are the end all and be all of Discordianism. You sit at your computers and insulate yourselves with each other.

Because 4 people made fun of this kid or disagreed with him or something (I think, I'm not seeing where it happened), everyone on this site is elitist assholes that prove how enlightened he is and we make him laugh and something with hyena I think he want a Lion King RPG sub-forum because he has a right to his opinion and so do we but we're mean and shouldn't have mean opinions because that makes him laugh but I don't think he likes laughing because if we all make him laugh that should be a good thing but maybe his laughter is pain because clowns killed his mom in the ass which makes him lash out when he laughs at how stupid we all are for not liking his fun ideas and paradigms and stuff.
