public education is seeing a reduction of about $10 million
there is no new funding to educate an estimated 11,000 new students who are expected to be enrolling in Utah's public schools in the fall. The state already has the lowest per-pupil spending in the nation.
the cut to education means $8 million less for new school buildings, no state money for new library books next year, the elimination of a science and math program for educators and a number of smaller cuts to programs such as school nursing, concurrent enrollment and the state's electronic high school.
education funding would need to increase 20% to catch the next lowest state here. more and more roads were built, paid for an olympics, built a soccer stadium the voters voted down. So now, utah has a championship soccer team and the best commute in the country, and being stupid enough to vote these asshole fossils back into office over and over. This bare bones budget means students get you a bares bones education. Education will be the driving force in our economy for the years to come and the utah legislature just bent over everyone in the education system for a nice ass raping with no lube.
we have another freeway system being built in a subburn of salt lake called lehi. They were going to make it a toll road to pay for the construction, buuuttt nooooo because of the surplus the state got it doesn't have to!!! WTF!!!! that money could of been put towards education!!!! NOT ANOTHER FUCKING ROAD!!!!!

One small 'victory' is that the bill that would have made it a criminal offense for a woman to have a miscarriage got neutered down a bit and now states that it is only a criminal offense if an abortion is not carried out by a doctor in a clinic. For those not in the know, this is a knee jerk reaction to some moronic woman who paid a guy $300 to basically falcon punch a baby out of her. The guy got put behind bars, but the legislators were pissed off that they could find no law to charge the woman with something, so they decided to make one up. The first version of it said, bluntly paraphrased, 'lose your baby, goto jail' with no real definition of what that may mean.
And also, thankfully Buttar's idea of eliminating the 12th grade got shot down.
But on the wtf side, residents in un-incorporated parts of Salt Lake county are now getting monthly in-the-mail bills for police service. Not even kidding: http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=9865506 $174 a year for the typical household. If you don't pay, they levy a lien against your property. Guess cutting back on the number of jackbooted cops was not an option to fit into the budget, so those folks are now being taxed and having to pay a bill.
One of the 'message' bills Utah signed the other day would take back a large amount of Federal land by right of eminent domain to the State of Utah. The idea here is that the state, who is facing all these budget issues, wants this bill to have to be challenged by the Supreme Court, because they feel they could be making billions of bucks with this land to pay for schools. Of course, what I am getting out of this is that they want to take this uninhabitable, middle of no where land that is currently part of national parks and under the ownership of the American public, parcel it up, and sell it off, to pay for shit we probably don't need, with a tiny bit going to the schools. Bear in mind that a huge part of Utah is owned by the Federal government, but really... a huge part of Utah is really seriously uninhabitable unless you really, really want it bad enough.
Another minor annoyance to me is that there is no such thing as a 'local' cop, sorta. All cops are by default state cops, so they can cross jurisdictions and hand out punishment. And of course, some things are legal here, and not there, like making a U-turn is illegal in Murray, but OK in Salt Lake...
Plus add in just how badly the Mormons hate gay marriage (but they just came out in support of adding being gay as a banned item for landlords to use as discrimination for housing), and how the church continues to buy up land and buildings downtown (but it's ok, they are gonna lease them out, of course to entities they feel are OK, right?)... Gah.
I don't know that it is really any better elsewhere, but sometimes the crap that goes on in Utah makes you just angry.

After years of looking, I am finally at a job that pays well and I really enjoy, in a niche market, and the company is located in Utah. That's how I got here, and that's my reason for staying. The hassle of living here is not all that high, and, there are mountains very nearby and lots of things to do, so I'm willing to put up with it.

Plus, Mormons are now a minority in Salt Lake City proper (but a huge majority in rural parts). They are mostly 'powerful' due to the requirement to have a large family and automatically deduct 10% of your paycheck right to the church... can't convert them, breed them.

Even the mountains are inferior. Admittedly, they get some of the best snow on earth, but that's no reason to live in a high-desert shithole, especially in the age of air travel.
also, it's been my personal experience that people who wait for the situation to be just right to make a positive change in their life rather than just going and MAKING it happen tend to never end up making much (if any) change at all.
In other words, fuck that noise. If Utah sucks that bad just pack up all of your shit and move somewhere that seems more in line with what you want out of life.

I lived in northern New Mexico and spent a lot of time in Albuquerque. It has a little bit of a culture, lots of good mexican food, but lackluster mountains. My choices before coming to Utah were to move to Abq or goto SLC. I choose SLC because it had more options.
Denver has better mountains near it, but in all reality Denver itself has become the LA of the Rockies. Crime and boneheaded city management there has resulted in the current situation of Denver planning on turning off over 1/2 of its street lights, discontinuing after school and summer programs for youth, and stopping all but basic park maintenance. Nice to visit, but certainly do not want to live there.
The trick with Utah, and it took me a long time to really understand this, is that due to the upbringing of most, people are really motivated to build things and branch out. Thus, the culture here is quite literally chain restaurants and stores, mostly because a lot of them originated or were given momentum. The state motto is 'industry' after all. This can suck if you want unique, but it is what it is.
The mountains in Utah are not quite the same as being in the Rockies of Colorado, but after having spent a lot of time checking them out, I'd say they are very accessible and very nearby, not to mention being pretty decent to look at. And, as you point out, airfare being what it is, I can go visit Colorado (or just drive there) whenever I want.
Utah and SLC is not a place to goto if you want to integrate into culture, it's a lot more about learning how to do your own thing and going for it. My GF is from Chicago, and constantly has trouble with this. Plus it helps if you are either an outdoorsy person or into motorsports of any kind. The gun laws are also very lax out here, but gun crimes are low, so you feel like you have a lot more freedom. Heck, crime itself is pretty low in SLC compared to other cities of its size.
Personally, the two biggest things that annoy me are the smog when we have temperature inversions (especially long ones) and dealing with traffic (but the motorcycle makes that a little more fun). Living here was not my first choice, but honestly, does any place have less bullshit? Should I pack up and leave the first time the legislature passes a bunk law, or should I pitch in my voice to protest and discuss how things can be changed for the better?
In the good things department, last year, lots of liquor laws changed. Bars are now open, homebrewing is now legal (like we paid attention to that one), and penalties for drunk driving is much higher (something states like New Mexico cannot seem to get right). Plus, Salt Lake city made a positive step towards more equal rights earlier this year by passing rules regarding not discriminating against sexual orientation, as I mentioned above. So things can change, but sometimes the middle steps are wrong, or hard.

It was illegal unless you got a permit and put up a $10,000 bond. But of course, the permits didn't exist and no one knew the process of applying, and since homebrewers don't typically run bars no one cared ;)
Now you can brew up to 100 gallons a year, or 200 gallons a yer if there is more than one adult of age in your household, but you can still only transport like a case of beer for personal use at any time. Silly, silly.

I'd wager to say that by being here, and not supporting the LDS and etc, it gives you a better chance to dilute their power. What's one voice in an thousand, though, right? By my count, there is at least a half dozen Discordians in Utah, and most of the youth I talk to are no longer buying the old stories from the LDS, with this new age of instant information and discussion. Things will not change over night, but LDS is already a minority in it's home city. Lot of people are tired of the old, and are waiting for one or two people to stand up and change something.
So, forgive me for not being part of the hive mind wherever you live and feel it's all wonderful and I can't stand to possibly be the unique underdog in my community. I'm sorry I am not not going along with the masses of the cattle class like you clearly are, and obviously, this makes me pretty stupid. and one more thing, and this isn't an attack on where you live, just the facts as I see them: Nebraska has WAY more going for it than Utah. Omaha is 4 times the city that SLC is in every metric that matters to me. Better bars, better food, better cultural opportunites, hotter girls, friendlier citizens, less intrusive authorities, more progressive social policies, better music scene, etc. Nebraska has alot of water in it, which is a big plus, and even seems to contain fewer garden-variety evangelical nutjobs than all of the surrounding states. Granted, the stuff you'll see from I-80 wouldn't give you that impression of the place, but I've spent plenty of time there and driven through most of the major highways in the state and if I were ever going to move to a non-coastal state that'd be the one.

Plus, they require members to send in 10% of their earnings, which the member can then deduct from his taxes. And the church itself doesn't have to pay taxes, at least for religious purposes (sub-corporations still have to pay taxes). It's quite the sweet setup for any religion, but I think Mormons have really capitalized on this.

The Mormons are rapidly expanding in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, the Phillipines, Japan, Nigeria, Germany, Portugal, the UK, American Samoa, the Cook Islands and Tonga. In the South Pacific in particular, Mormons have a plurality in several states, and that will likely become a majority before global warming sinks those islands.
While Utah will always remain a spiritual (and likely logistical) centre, they are not without options, and there are many small states with lax banking and taxation policies that would likely welcome such a wealthy religion, should they ever feel the need to remove themselves.
And thats not even going into the business investments, land purchases and companies that are associated with the LDS.
Plus, they require members to send in 10% of their earnings, which the member can then deduct from his taxes. And the church itself doesn't have to pay taxes, at least for religious purposes (sub-corporations still have to pay taxes). It's quite the sweet setup for any religion, but I think Mormons have really capitalized on this.
Yeah, the Mormon work ethic is legendary. Not to mention there are lots of Mormons in the FBI, and the military (esp intelligence). All in all, they have quite the set-up.
